What Are Your Thoughts On This St. Gaudens Someone Requested Me To Post For Them.

I was contacted via email by someone who had wanted an opinion on the St. Gauden's their mother had purchased quite some time ago. She wanted a second opinion so I offered her the opportunity to see many opinions on her mother's coin by posting it here and giving her a link. She knows what I think about it so I won't post my thoughts until after several opinions have been offered by other board members. Maybe she will consider joining our community here on the boards.

Either it's polished or fake, and what's with the crud by her head, is it putty gone bad?

    A bad counterfeit.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

This is what is commonly referred to as a non-deceptive counterfeit.

I think the point has been made. It is likely that someone took advantage of the owner and it can be chalked up as a lesson learned. I'd suggest to the coins owner is reading the posts to allow your friend who posted this for you to handle your future purchases. You'd be better off.

LOL. John you crack me up.

"MOM" I hope you didn't spend too much on it. Someone may be interested in purchasing it though. There are people that collect counterfeits.

Is it dark chocolate, or milk chocolate?

Miss Liberty is either a wrestler or a baseball player because the crushing grip she is giving that torch has bent it. Have never seen a Saint like this before....and don't expect to ever again either.

I told her that I thought it was a definitely a counterfeit and obviously plated with some gold colored metal. She didn't believe me so I asked if she would like a large number of intelligent opinions. She said yes so I posted it here and provided her a link. I didn't hear a reply back from her since I posted it but I'm sure she's seen this thread.

My opinion is the coin is a counterfeit, non-gold that has been plated. Note the lack of cartwheel lustre - it's very flat and the devices look polished. Additionally, the dark area to the right of miss liberty looks like some air might have gotten under the plating and bubbled up. The counterfeit is not cast or made from an original, rather a re-engraving. Note the relief is different than a genuine $20, the lettering is different, and the proportions of different parts of the design are not correct.
  • I cannot find this one in David Aker's book: A Handbook of 20th-Century United States Gold Coins 1907-1933. Should I send back the book? How much is 516 grams of chocolate worth?
