I guess this covers that "ultra rare" Cheerios Sacky.

My favorite is slabbed bullion Coins. They all are graded MS-69 and MS-70, no matter what the actual grade is. After all, who's going to send in 1000 coins if 400 are going to come back as MS-65?

I think phrases like, "It has great eye-appeal", are definitely overly used and abused.

ER - I'm not sure I would consider "Silver plug" a marketing gimmick, but I wouldn't argue against your other suggestions.

  • ER,

Coins with silver plugs are not marketing gimmicks, but rather an interesting part of early mint technology. The marketing of any particular plugged coin can take on a circus theme, though. Also, knobbed or pointed 6s, large or small dates, and such don't belong in the same bin as first strike, autographed whatever, and the like. The latter are post manufacture pure marketing bullsh!t that are a debasement to serious collectors. Mint state grading is also a marketing ploy to separate the fool and his money, reminiscent of Spinal Tap's 'but this one goes to eleven'.
  • ERER Posts: 7,345
Shamika and slumlord98, I know exactly what you mean and what a silver plug is, but like I said, to me it's just another hype (if you don't like the word gimmick), designed to jack up the price. I'm surprised they haven't already added the adjustment mark as a another variety. And while they're at it, there should be the horizontal, the vertical, and the oblique adjustment marks as separarate sub varieties.
But, what's great about this hobby/business is you decide what you like.

My personal favorite gimmick (annoyance) is the ad that spends a paragraph or two explaining their "star", "1-10 scale" (or whatever) eye appeal grading scale. Then every coin in their lisiting has the highest possible self-ascribed designation.

actually, many from the list aren't marketing ploys. some of the designations were used by collectors way before any grading service attched them to the insert. others are only used because collectors requested them to be a part of a grade.

it would seem a true "marketing gimmick" would be something along the lines of the Autograph Series and The Official Grading Service Of The ANA where they are expected to generate interest aside from the coin itself. there are many, to be sure, and to the degree you lump them together as one, the entire concept of "Grading Service" should head the list. but again, i think the whole concept grew from a true need, it didn't create the need.
