Grade Opinions- Three Cent Nickel

Here I go again. image

image

image

I have my opinion and I am more confident in this opinion than I was with my 3CS.

The coin is in an album!! There is NO rim damage.

Please say what you grade it and, if possible, why you give it that grade. I find that makes for more educational posts, and this is about education here.

Thanks in advance! image

VF35. Interestingly, I see more wear on the obverse than the reverse. Nice coin.

I grade the coin VF details, net F for corrosion -- with the disclaimer that I am anything but a circulated 3CN expert.

I agree with VF details possibly due to what seems like corrosion.

    3 cent nickels are cool.

According to the PCGS Grading book: ...(F12/15) "...there will be 10-20% of the hair detail on strong strikes and most of the leaves of the wreath should be separated. Well-struck coins will have some lines on Roman numerals visible..."

...(VF20/35)..examples will have 25-50% of hair detail missing...

    I don't see 50-75% of hair detail

    I say F12

Let's ask Mark because this is not my series and if I am wrong I would like to know as well as admit that I was wrong...
Mark- by these pics would your first gut assessment (and I have heard that there is none better than your first gut reactionimage ) be that this one has been cleaned-especially looking at the mottled reverse?
I hope I am wrong Amanda....

OK...Is there something other than hair detail in grading these things??? Apparently, I'm about as good at grading 3 Cent Nickels as I am at grading 3 Cent Silvers...image

From the images, it looks as if the coin MIGHT have been lightly cleaned. However, it very well might just be the lighting/images. By the way, I deal primarily in high grade mint state and Proof coins, so I am out of my element with respect to coins like this.

I think it could go VF30 with the reverse looking more VF35.

    Nice coin Leiana image

Pictures can be deceiving; but, based just on the picture, I'd guess that somebody tried to put some luster back on a corroded/VF details coin.
  • ziggy29ziggy29 Posts: 18,668 ✭✭✭
VF-30+ details, looks porous. The reverse looks to have fully EF details given the full "III". Maybe VF-35 overall?

Of course you can't grade from an image.......image

Let me then proffer a sharpness grade of EF45 / Net VF30 due to corrosion (or the appearance thereof). It also looks to be struck from a die with a good bit of erosion.
  • JRoccoJRocco Posts: 14,277 ✭✭✭✭✭
    Hey Amanda,
Looking at that pic again it looks like a flash was used. If that is the case Amanda that may explain why I see a cleaned coin also. Reflections from a flash can give that "too bright" look to a coin like this.
If you think the coin has not been cleaned with the coin in hand, than I will defer to your assessment that the coin is original. Let me also say that without a cleaning, the coin will be more in the 30 range in my opinionimage

  • robertprrobertpr Posts: 6,862 ✭✭✭
In my crooked opinion, I think there may indeed have been a flash used in the image, or a high ISO setting on the camera.

VF, but more marks than I like to see on a coin of that grade. The reverse looks XF.

XF40, but I hate being known as loosier & goosier than Coinguy1.

Some of these in choice BU are missing 25% of the reverse bands and plenty of hair detail.
