I was hoping to snag a Kirby card in the '86 pack but didn't get one. Maybe in the '85, eh?!
I did get a classic, though:
#626 Roy Thomas - Mariners
The pack also coughed up the following with 2 or 3 being high-grade:
194 Craig McMurtry - Braves 768 Vern Ruhle - Indians 680 George Foster - Mets 405 TBTC 1961 - Roger Maris (a possible PSA9 and a fun read of what happened "25 years ago" - 35 years ago from today!) 632 Dave Von Ohlen - Indians 179 Stu Cliburn - Angels 157 Ron Hassey - Yankees 745 Willie Upshaw - Blue Jays 275 Charlie Hough - Rangers 322 Bob Forsch - Cardinals 61 Karl Best - Mariners (the "Best" is the "worst"-centered card t-b & l-r in the pack) 594 Chris Bando - Indians 31 Jamie Easterly - Indians (back is MC with the front almost there) 105 Gary Ward - Rangers (ST)

Nice jog down memory lane with these...but, pretty tough to get a card in good condition out of these '86s. Those borders are killers and the centering is off on all of these bad boys.
Here's the 'star' card from the back and probably the best centered card in the pack.....
...the rest of the pack goes like this....
Ray Fontenot - Cubs Joaquin Andujar - Cardinals Denny Martinez - Orioles Bud Black - Royals (centering is good on this one) Jay Howell - A's Keith Moreland - Cubs Larry Parrish - Rangers Ray Miller - Twins Frank Williams - Giants Pascual Perez - Braves Mike Jeffcoat - Giants Jerry Reed - Indians Jim Beattie - Mariners Bert Blyleven - Twins (gum stained)
We're coming up to some very good packs in the next week or two! I wish that we could speed the process up a bit though.

finally opened my pack, 1st 86 pack for me. 85 was a big year for me but i sat out 86. anyway, nothing worth scanning . i did get a rose 83/84/85 highlight card but since it was the back card it has a bad corner. most corners were fine, centering was poor , and many cards were upside down. maybe they were pulling some rookies at the factory that day. worth mentioning the reverse of the tony perez card- there's no room for anything. 22 yrs of stats. born in cuba. i think he's high fiving eric davis on the front. i better scan that one
I had a rough pack. Dinged corners, lots of centering problems and a warping factor around the gum. Most of the cards seem really fuzzy and out of focus, too. Regardless, here are the highlights.
1. Big Cecil's rookie card. Did you know that he and his son, Prince, don't talk at all? I think Cecil's had some financial trouble and has caused some for his son. It's really too bad. 2. Did you know the Brewers retired Rollie Fingers' jersey number? He only played there for five years, but he did win a Cy Young and MVP in 1981 and helped the team to the World Series in 1982. 3. Ryno was one of the biggest stars in baseball back in 1986. Too bad this card has a pretty bad spider crease in the top right corner.

The ony thing that could have been worse, would be if there had been a turd in the pack instead of cards. There must be some really good stuff in my remaining packs.
This is still the most fun I've had with cards in a while. I can't wait until Sunday.

Hey, some of those guys were awesome for a few years! Go check out how good Mario Soto was. And Bill Madlock. This is exactly why I love this thread...it reminds me of guys that were fantastic ballplayers but have since slipped from my memory.
I wish more people would post scans...that's the best part.
true. but, i grew up and collected in the early 90's. so, my memories of madlock and others you mentioned are not as strong. mookie...yes...just because of the mets world series winning ways.
but, ive been reading a lot of the backs...very interesting information about these players. and, as a stat guy, its always fun to look at their numbers.
Here are my 1986 Topps cards. The Ryan is a bit OC, but still a nice pull, and I also got his rookie friend Koosman. This pack was full of good to exceptional players who put in a large number of big league seasons.
There were four 'minor' stars with one HOFer in my '85 pack. Centering was a bit off on the front (as you can see from the scan), but the backs were really bad on the centering. About 80/20 on most and some were 90/10.
The full pack results are the following....
Wade Boggs - Red Sox (HOF) Kirk Gibson - Tigers Fernando Valenzuela - Dodgers Dave Kingman - A's Jack Morris - Tigers Tim Teufel - Twins Onix Concepcion - Royals Carmen Castillo - Indians Mike Stanton - Mariners Marc Hill - White Sox Duane Walker - Reds Luis Deleon - Padres Scot Thompson - Giants Mike Jones - Royals Rod Dedeaux - Mgr (Olympic Team)

also vance/vern law son/father card jamie easterly ricky nelson steve nicosia ron romanick rick miller jeff burrough #1 draft pick dave smith rob wilfong brad gulden bobby grich willie aikens jorge bell (at least he was an mvp) mike flanagan (a cy young winner once upon a time)

Wooo hooo!! I dont think I ever got that many on one card in the day!
Who's going to get the coveted Barbaro Garbey RC? I don't think they list his full name on the '85 Topps but on his '86 Donruss they list it on the back as Barbaro Garbey Garbey. That's gotta get up there on the all-time great names list.
599 - storm davis 240 - dave steib 448 - derrel thomas 245 - chili davis 294 - tom nieto 196 - pete o'brien 486 - steve balboni game card 285 - dan driessen 612 - mike armstrong 83 - charlie moore 620 - dwight gooden (think i'll put this one on the bay today) 530 - dave dravecky 8 - juan samuel - RB 163 - dennis eckersley 417 - john franco
note - nice centering throughout with corner wear on most.

zef: Son, we live in a world that has packs and those packs need to be ripped by men with the urge. Who's gonna do it? You? You, ldferg? I have a greater responsibility than you can possibly fathom. You weep for Show and curse the Non Scanners; you have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know: that Eric Show's death, while tragic, probably ruined packs and that my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, cherishes Show cards.
You don't want the scan because deep down in places you don't talk about at parties you want me on ripping that pack, you need me ripping that pack. We use words like gem mint, well centered, and dripping gloss. We use then as the backbone of a life trying to rip some cards. You use them as a punchline. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who questions and watches the packs I rip, the very packs he provided and then questions the manner in which I rip them. I would rather you just said "thank you," and went on your way. Otherwise, I suggest that you pick up a pack and scan a card. Either way, I don't give a damn what you think you are entitled to.
ajw: Did you rip the pack!? zef: I did the job I had to do. ajw: Will you post the scan!? zef: You're God damn right I will!
Here are my 1986's. A few were nicely centered, most not.
Shawon Dunston, Buddy Bell, Whitey Herzog, Denny Gonzalez, Alan Knicely, (Elemenopeo, your Knicely in Knicer than mine) Bobby Brown, Randy St. Claire, Mike Stenhouse, Rafael Santana, Steve Carlton, (very off center) Tom Lasorda, Eddie Whitson, Bill Caudill, Herm Winningham, and Lary Sorensen.
Here are my 1985's.
Steve Braun, Rod Carew, (70/30 centering) Aurelio Lopez, Rick Langford, Bob Knepper, Tim Foli, Rich Gale, George Frazier, Steve Carlton, (another very off center) Glenn Hubbard, Jody Davis, Alfredo Griffin, Alejandro Pena, Doug Corbett, and Buck Martinez.
I think I got more future managers so far than anyone else.

ajw: I think I'm entitled.
zef: You want scans?!
ajw: I want the scans!
zef: You can't handle the scans!
zef: Son, we live in a world that has packs and those packs need to be ripped by men with the urge.
