Help with crossover from NGC to PCGS

I have a bunch of NGC $20 gold coins that I would like to get them in PCGS holders. For some reason, I like PCGS more than NGC and want all my coins in PCGS holders. Is that the wrong mentality?

I'm guessing that if I tried to use the crossover service, most of them will not cross just because and I would have wasted my money. And I'm not about to risk cracking them out.

What's the best way to cross them over? Or should I really not bother?

Depends on why you purchased the coin. If selling, PCGS is the way to go. Prices realized state that to be true for the most part. I feel that you limit yourself by only purchasing PCGS coins. There are alot of super coins in the other top four TPG holders. But you have to know what your looking at before purchasing or use a select few quality dealers to work with.

You leave yourself no options here. Sounds like you need to buy PCGS coins then.

I wouldn't crack them out. You can cross at same grade or cross at any. You just never know how things are going to come out unless you know how to grade and only submit PQ coins.

When you submit a crossover you can specifiy either a minimum grade, or cross at any grade.

So it depends on how much you want them in PCGS holders.

-Are you willing to accept a possibly lower grade to have the coin in a PCGS holder?
-Are you willing to gamble paying the PCGS fee and have the coins returned in the NGC holders?

Since you don't state what the dates and NGC grades are, I'm not sure you are going to get much good advice.

I don't know how many a "bunch" are, but at $30 a pop you would probably be better off buying more coins instead of submitting them

Submit them for an even crossover standard. The few that may cross will more than make up for the returned ones.

Yes. It is the coin that matters, and hopefully whoever will eventually pay you the most for it will be someone who pays for it based on the coin and doesn't worry what holder it is in.

(I also realize just how realistic that statement may be. But for it to be false is for the hobby to follow a path towards its destruction. I just may be a little too hopeful to admit it to be false.)

It has been my (very limited) experience and the same of many others who have posted about this topic on this forum that only PQ -- ie., very few -- coins for the grade in NGC holders will cross to PCGS (at the same grade).

If I were in your position, I would have your coins reviewed by someone who is very familiar with PCGS's grading for gold so you know what to expect, then you can weigh the advantage of the crossover (for instance your NGC MS 64 may be worth more than the same coin in a PCGS MS 63 holder). They will most likely recommend that you break them out for the highest grades. Regardless what PCGS might say, it is clear (to me) that coins that are broken out fare much better than those sent in NGC holders. Also, knowing what I do about NGC's grading of gold, don't exect a high crossover rate -- expect most of your coins to go down in grade. If you are not planning on selling anytime soon (or have another reason for the crossover like the registry), then I wouldn't bother with it...Mike

Gold is more valuable than Plastic
PCGS Inserts can be move valuable than gold

Spend your money accordingly
