PCI UNDERgrading? Impossible! Another half cent purchase...

This one intrigued me. PCI usually has a reputation for overgrading, but unless there are hidden problems I can't see in the pictures, I think I agree with the seller and that PCI undergraded this one. There looks like there might be a little bit of verdegris in the devices of the reverse, but in my opinion the detail is AU all day long. It wasn't exactly a steal, since I paid full grey sheet AU money for it ($100), but it looks to be a very nice example.

Again, there's a return privilege, so I'm not worried.

Opinions (both of PCI's grade and of the purchase in general)?

  • About 10+ years ago I bought a 20 cent piece that was in a PCI slab graded AU58. Cracked it out and sent it to PCGS and it came back MS61......

Yeah, that was another reason I considered it -- older PCI slab, back when they were at least somewhat conservative, not the new gold-rimmed slabs.

Looks very AU to me! image I do agree with you about the verdigris on the reverse, in the 'A' right? I like the overall look of that coin. The surfaces are nice and even! image

I had a huge Indian DDO graded PCI15 that crossed to PCGS XF40!

I treat the older PCI green 10 digit slabs with the same respect as I do with PCGS/NGC/ANACS ones.

Nice original coin. The obverse looks to have to many hits to go AU,and may well be overgraded due to ...

Nice coin. 45-50 would be about right. EAC grade would be 50, net AG 3 for obverse ticks, reverse verdigris, and slabbing. image

When Louis Revels (Chattanooga Coin Co) owned PCI they tended to undergrade. After he sold PCI and the numbers changed from the 10 digits, the grading went downhill.

Yes. They were very conservative back then. The gold border holders came after a change in ownership and are essentially a different company.
