Wow. My pack was so bad. The best cards were Tony Pena, beacuse you can see the beginnings of a grill, and local hero Terry Francona. I will settle for duds now in anticipation of the weeks to come.
I remember ripping these packs looking for Matt Nokes, Sam Horn and Jody Reed rookies. The McGwire RB error was big time too.

I am pretty sure that the corrected version is the one that has already been posted by ArnyVee. The error has a white area below Mac's foot on the bottom right corner of the card.

All commons in my pack. The centering was very nice. However most of the cards had a bend or wave in the card from the gum. The closer the card was to the gum the more noticeable the wave. The gum ruined the Lou Pinella card it was attached to. The other cards I got were:
Ron Darling, Joaquin Andujar, Bryn Smith, Joel Davis, Greg Minton, Gene Larkin, Chris Bando, Rich Gossage, Frank Lucchesi, John Cerutti, Casey Candaele, Jack Clark All Star, Glenn Braggs, and Rey Quinones
Hope for better luck with the next pack. But, you know, this is still fun. The anticipation, the pack break, the thrill or disappointment, and the memories. There should always be memories and hopefully they should be good ones. Hopefully that is why we are doing this. If there happens to be a big hit with a gem card, then that is just iceing on the cake and not the goal. Thanks again, Drew, for your efforts in putting this together.

Hey guys, I just got back from Boston, where I saw my first game at Fenway. A buddy hooked up 8th row seats for the Sunday night game. What a place.
Anyway, here are some scans from my pack. In 1988, a pack with Gooden and Boggs would have been just about as good as it gets. Both cards are in great shape, but the scans are a bit distorted from a slight curve to the cards. I'm now two for two on pulling Tony Armas cards. What are the odds I pull one from my 87 pack?
Edited to say: isn't the Boggs card fantastic? The photo and cropping are just great, and fit so well with the card design. The 88s really look nice, IMO.

Boy, these 88 all star cards are U-G-L-Y. One positive..all the cards have solid centering.
1. 1987 was the year Dave Stewart became a stud. He was under .500 coming into the season, then won 84 games in the next four seasons. He also pulled his hat down further than anyone this side of Mike Jackson. 2. Nice airbrushing, Reggie. 3. Can you imagine if millions of Americans had a picture of you looking like Ed Lynch? 4. Another Thigpen for me? 5. Anyone remember that Terry Pendleton stole an MVP award from someone named Barry back in 1991? 6. Are we sure that's not Dale Murphy?
Wow! They really messed up the coalation on this pack!
Nah, not really, I just ripped a rack case a couple of weeks ago.
This pack had all commons: 224 Wayne Tolleson 666 Von Hayes 786 Jimy Williams 81 Padres Team Card 445 Dave Lopes 722 Bob Knepper 259 Mike Greenwell RC? 685 Jerry Hairston 556 Angels Team Card 49 Terry Harper 332 Joe Price 570 Sid Fernandez 587 Eric Plunk 569 Wade Rowdon 195 Mike Pagliarulo 73 Walt Terrell 514 Orlando Merced
Not a whole lot that was interesting in this pack:
Every card had at least a minor ding, so nothing would grade an 8 or better.
It must have been a fairly uneventful 1986 season to include a "Most stolen bases in a season for a player over 40" record breaker card (though the previous record holder was Honus Wagner in 1914!).
My pack yielded the following commons, but the personal info line on the backs of the cards are fascinating....
Candy Maldonado - Giants "Candy finds traveling enjoyable." Mike Krukow - Giants "Mike is affectionately known as 'The Polish Prince'. He and his wife have three children" Ray Knight - Mets (No 'extra' info on back) Fred Toliver - Phillies (No 'extra' info on back) Leon Durham - Cubs "Leon is affectionately known as 'The Bull'." Greg Brock - Dodgers "Greg once earned himself the free use of a car for a year by recording a hole-in-one golf match." Jack Howell - Angels "Jack and his wife have one son, Joshua." Dave Gumpert - Cubs "Dave's boyhood hero was Al Kaline. He letered in cross country and baseball in high school. Was Second Team All American as college senior." Gorman Thomas - Brewers "Gorman and his wife are parents of 2 children." Andres Thomas - Braves (No 'extra' info on back) Gene Walter - Padres "Gene attended Eastern Kentucky University." Ken Landreaux - Dodgers "Ken led Arizona State to 1976 College World Series. He and his wife are parents of a son, Kenneth." Steve Lake - Cardinals "Steve graduated from Lennox (Cal.) High School. He and his wife are the parents of 2 children." Rick Sutcliffe - Cubs "Rick's hoppies include playing pool and basketball. He and his wife are parents of one child, Shelby." Tigers Leaders card (Mound visit w/Sparky/W.Hernandez/L.Parrish) Andre Thornton - Indians (Wax Stain) "Andre played in 1965 Babe Ruth World Series."

I *hate* that Mattingly card. I remember being incredibly disappointed the first time I saw it in the spring of 1987. He was the absolute stud of the hobby at the time, and it's such a boring image. His 1986 card is just about perfect, and his 1987 is such a let down.
That's probably the only card I can remember seeing for the first time. I even mention it on the intro to my Will Clark website. Check it out.
Anyone else have similar memories of seeing a card for the *very* first time. (and not just in person, as we all saw pictures of the 52 Mantle and T206 Wagner long before seeing them in person.
ArnyVee - great idea about listing the 'extra' information. They had to dig deep for some of this stuff! Here's my '87T pack-rippin' results:
385 Orel Hershiser (LAD) - "Orel made All-Conference team in high school and was club's MVP at Bowling Green University. He and his wife have one son, Orel Leonard V (11-24-84)." 480 Jim Rice (Bos) - none 524 Bob Shirley (NYY) - "Bob and his wife are the parents of 3 children; Charles, Clinton and Clayton. He enjoys restoring antiques and watching Bill Murray movies." 74 Dan Pasqua (NYY) - "Dan was All-County selection at Old Tappan (N.M.) High School in 1979. Was All-American at William Patterson College in 1981 and 1982 campaigns." (oooOOOooo) 222 Denny Walling (Hou) - none 518 Gene Mauch (Manager Angels) - none 633 Jose Uribe (SF) - none + plenty of room for extra info = pretty boring, eh? 283 Doug Drabek (NYY) - "Doug was an All-Texas high school track star." 448 Chris Bosio (Mil) - "Chris enjoys basketball, football and bowling." -- What?! He doesn't like baseball?! 459 Dennis Eckersley (ChiCubs) - none 610 Jim Rice AS (Bos) - none 167 Jim Deshaies (Hou) - "Jim graduated from LeMoyne (Syracuse) College." 184 Bobby Bonilla (Pitt) - "Bobby plays paddleball in his leisure time." 306 Red Sox Leaders 545 Buddy Bell (Cin) - "Buddy and his wife have 3 sons and 2 daughters." 572 Pete Ladd (Sea) - "Pete is affectionately nicknamed "Big Foot". He and his wife are the parents of a daughter, Lindsey." 114 Billy Beane (Minn) - "Billy's sister, Chris, was member of Cal.-San Diego's 1981-82 Division III Volleyball Championship Team." Way to go, Billy!
Eleven of the cards are very nicely centered and the others wouldn't qualify for OC, so all-in-all a fun pack to open.

I hit the motherload! 6 rookies. I wonder if any of these guys will pan out, its only been 19 years.
I too enjoyed the extra information, and decided to provide my own
Swindell had a full career - 17 yrs. 123-122 career record with a respectable 3.86 career era Cangelosi jad a full career - 12 yrs. 1038 games Loynd was out of baseball half way thru the 87 season Eichhorn was called up in '82 and went 0-3 with a 5.45 era in 7 games. He was back down in the minors until '86 when he went 14-6. He then went 10-6 in 87. Over the next 8 seasons he had 24 wins which matched the 86-87 wins. Anderson was out of baseball by the age of 27 Felder hit above .275 once in his 10 year career which ended in 1994 after playing 58 games for Houston, his 4th team in 5 years.
Don't you wish you knew these types of facts when you were stockpiling rookies back then?
I wish that I had that encyclopedia when I was stockpiling Mackey Sasser & Lance Johnson rookies in '88! Good thing that I was able to help myself by picking up quite a few Greg Maddux and Raphael Palmeiro rookies at the same time though!

283 Doug Drabek (NYY) - "Doug was an All-Texas high school track star."
448 Chris Bosio (Mil) - "Chris enjoys basketball, football and bowling." -- What?! He doesn't like baseball?!

Eleven of the cards are very nicely centered and the others wouldn't qualify for OC, so all-in-all a fun pack to open.
Got a hot pack!
Not...got the usual commons and a few minor stars.

I too enjoyed the extra information, and decided to provide my own
Swindell had a full career - 17 yrs. 123-122 career record with a respectable 3.86 career era
Cangelosi jad a full career - 12 yrs. 1038 games
Loynd was out of baseball half way thru the 87 season
Eichhorn was called up in '82 and went 0-3 with a 5.45 era in 7 games. He was back down in the minors until '86 when he went 14-6. He then went 10-6 in 87. Over the next 8 seasons he had 24 wins which matched the 86-87 wins.
Anderson was out of baseball by the age of 27
Felder hit above .275 once in his 10 year career which ended in 1994 after playing 58 games for Houston, his 4th team in 5 years.
Don't you wish you knew these types of facts when you were stockpiling rookies back then?
My Auctions
I think thats the first year they did that in the 80's. Anyone know anymore on the subject?
My Auctions
Great idea to list the "career in a nutshell" facts ... I really enjoyed it!
It's pretty cool to open a fresh pack and then be able to look up in the baseball encyclopedia and find out how those rookies panned out.
props!
