What Grade Would PCGS Give This Morgan?

It's an 1886-P VAM-1C (Hot-50) currently in an NGC holder. I could get NGC to VAM tag it or cross and tag at PCGS. How do you think it would fare in the latter case?

A lot of small marks on the cheek so probably a 63.

If you look closer, there are really only two very tiny tocks on the cheek, one on the neck and one below the lips. The rest is the original surface (note the strike was a little less than full) playing with the light. A great example I guess of how images can be difficult to grade with.

tough to grade from a image but that one looks gem ms65 to me..

i have recently made some ms63's and they tend to be rather baggy in comparision to what i think i see here...

    I'd give it a 75% shot at 65.

This is what it looks like in a 66...

I would guess 64- a little more gradeflation and then we're talking 65.....

It's so hard to tell from those small images how distracting the cheek marks are. I'm guessing 64 if they're a distraction, 65 if not.

That would go 65 on a grader's worst day in my opinion. Just a beautiful coin. Both on technical measures as well as eye appeal.

I think the strike is just a touch to weak so I'd say a grade of 64.

No worse than 64, probably 65. Liberty's cap looks a little banged up but the cheek looks clean. Strike and luster are good.

I would think you would have a good shot at getting 65 out of this one. Good luster image

John: MS-65 and a legitimate Shot 66. A very pretty coin!!

It has pretty and smooth satiny luster, as opposed to typical alligator skin grainy luster.

Small ticks on Obv may limit grade at 65, but reverse is MS-66 all day...

Nice coin, but it is at best a 64. PCGS will not grade a coin with a weak strike higher than a 64, and that coin is as weak as a typical "O" mint Morgan.

I would grade it a solid ms65, and to me, at least, the strike looks at least average to better than average, not weak.

I would guess MS64. It looks to have some hits in the field that would keep it from a MS65.

    Hi Coxe....

That is a nice coin with album toning that is as natural as can be, but if you look at the hair detail above the ear and compare it to a few pics posted here, you will see this coin probably won't make 65 for the very reason steve mentions in this thread.
A weak die strike even with great luster and eye appeal will prevent that LOFTY grade for Morgans. I believe the other reason it won't make it is that it is a Philadelphia minted Morgan with a population that is over 19 million.
When coins have a high mintage , it seems like the graders are even more scrutinizing, especially as it pertains to STRIKE DETAIL image...

Humble opinon , long winded, open minded, and all mine.

    Joe
