It's so MS65 I can't stand it. In MS65 it's worth ~50K.

Wish me luck...

I cracked out a 50K coin twice...a 1908-S MS65 Saint. The was just NO way it would ever downgrade it is so PQ. Of course, it never upgraded either. image

    This is a no-brainer as far as getting the 64 back...and a 40% shot at a 65 IMO.

and they put his picture on the web page like he had found them and was a hero!! He probably has another 20,000. These guys should be flogged. Hell, I have 2 coins where the POPs dropped from 150 to 80! I wish they would all come back.

BTW, he donated the 50¢ per label to, (I think), the ANA YN program and I believe PCGS matched it. That was pretty cool.

Thanks Stu. It would be a big upgrade. I already have one 65...I'd probably put this in auction, IF...IF I got the grade.

I cracked out 2 coins both in the 3K range.

I got almost no sleep until I saw the grades posted. One upgraded and the other got slabbed at the old grade.

    That was enough for me.

Best of luck to ya' on the upgrade.

I tell you I dont know how they are grading saints but the way they are grading Morgans there is no way i would crack out anything to resubmit it because it would probably drop a couple grades even if it was very PQ. Looks like their computer is stuck on MS-64 as soon as they enter that its a Morgan. Heck I dont even send them in the slab trying to get an upgrade, the only thing I send to them is something needing attribution because I know it wont be downgraded. But if it was raw it would play hell coming back the same grade

The question I have to ask is:

What's it worth if it comes back as an MS63?

Why not send it in the holder? Don't you think PCGS will give you a fair review? After all, you claim PCGS is the best TPGS. image

I do think they are. I am almost CERTAIN that NGC would upgrade it, but I want a PCGS coin.

Sometimes it works better to send it in raw. Many theories abound as to why, but with no downside I'll try it.

    Good luck.

One thing I've noticed is when there is a BIG jump for ONE grading point, the services get really conservative about giving out that ONE point. As type collector I’ve run into rare date coins in what appeared to be low ball graded holders on a number of occasions. I’d think, “THAT would be a great MS-64 for my type set, but the price, of course, for the rare date is something close to a trip to Mars.

Maybe you will get lucky, but most times the grades on rare dates, where one point would add a mint to the price end up sticking.

And you could get screwed, and I’ve heard some really sad stories about that, but I won’t relate them here.

I know all about it, Bill. I've done my share of submissions. That's why I think the odds are against an upgrade, but a 30-40% shot is worth a few tries. As a footnote, Akers thought it had a good shot at 65. Even as a 65 it's not an ultra-rarity, but a condition rarity. If it was a 1924-S or a 1926-D it would be near impossible, but they have made a few of these in the last few years.

Even if it stays at a 64, I have an extremely PQ64, which will sell at a premium, just as I paid a premium for it.

It will not go down. THAT I am certain of. I know these coins too well.

Well don't bet the ranch on it.

I knew a dealer who bought an 1878 dollar, (I forget the variety), in a PR-64 holder because he thought that it would upgrade to PR-65 or even 66. He cracked it out and sent it in, only to have it come back as MS-65, P-L, which was worth a boatload less money. imageimage Naturally he had to crack and try again or lose thousands of dollars. He got the coin back in a PR-64 holder and then blew it off as a bad experience.

So, yea, things can get A LOT worse that you could bargain for with some crack-outs.

I think the risk with Proofs is much greater than a MS coin. I'd never crack a proof.

I'm curious... why would you risk cracking out the coin and submitting it as raw rather than just submitting it as a regrade? From the PCGS site:

"Regrade: Use the “Regrade” service for coins previously graded by PCGS that you feel might be worthy of a higher grade. Submit the coins in the holder. Coins are cracked out and graded raw. We guarantee that the coins will not be downgraded. "

...if it does downgrade it becomes a guarantee issue.

The first thing that happens when a regrade goes in is that it is cracked out. The coins are graded raw and obviously the graders don't know the old grade...

When you crack out the coin yourself not only do you risk a downgrade, you more importantly risk damaging the coin! I've heard so many stories of folks cracking out coins for resubmission rather than using regrade service. Knowing how things actually work, I just don't understand why anyone would take the risk..

Biggest coin I ever cracked out was a 1901 Morgan in PCGS MS62 (about $3800 at the time). I was so nervous it about killed me!

It wasn't as bad the next two times, although my patience had about worn out by that time.
    When in doubt, don't.
