Usually when there's a crush like this, a sellout occurs 2-3 weeks later.
Maybe I underestimated the froth of collectors who'll pay whatever to own a buffalo proof.
This is probably a coin that even casual or non-collectors would like to own, just like
    the Marine commem.

Of course it could just be the greedy speculators who are hoarding again.

I got in for a minute, but where the heck is the Buffalo?!?! There isn't any link or anything?

John Snow and the Mint are so stupid.

I finally got through to the website....

An internal server error has occurred. If you would like to place an order you can always call 1-800-USA-MINT (872-6468). Sorry for the inconvenience.

Yes, but we can still blame Snow. It's only Paulson's first weeks. We'll blame him for the next one.

I really thought at first that the high price of $800 would hinder a sellout...however I am seeing a huge interest in non collectors picking up some....think it will sell out and be a pretty hot coin

Same here! I found out how bad the mint site was after it took 2 hours to get my franklin's

Or Maybe we are going to Blow up N Korea so the mint knows not to release the coins since gold will skyrocket and the aliens will buy all the oil wells. Also, they found out that the proofs all have 3 legs and a spear out their back.

I wanted one to go with my 2001 Buffalo's but the price is pricey...I think I will wait and see.

That's probably a big part of it. Even the Silver Dollar Bison coins didn't sell out this fast, and they were cheaper and there were fewer available. I suspect it is just like the BEP. Every time one of their premium federal reserve sets goes up, their system crashes. Each time they say will improve it (and offer more operators by phone), and each time they still manage to fu<k it upimage

I thought I remembered reading that the price was supposed to be $875, According to the press release which actually works on the main site the price will be $800. Was this a recent change or did read false information?

    Speculators do funny things.

hurry~ go buy them all and list them on ebay as soon as possible.

Speculate and buy them up. with 200,000+ or is that 300,000 already a price drop after raising PROOF GOLD coins earlier. They are not looking very bright , those suit and tie guys.
..... they'll be as common and easy to get as an 1892 Columbian Half Dollar. Why ? Cuz they'll be flooding the market. Mark my words.always available !
    ... always

    'course, I'm speculatin' image

at 200 dollars plus over market price of gold, I think I'll avoid the rush to the slaughterhouse !

Generally I would agree with you. They'll be available, but I don't think the price will ever come down. But when the mint sold out of the Silver Dollar Bison Unc. and Proof Sets, I never saw the price come down in the secondary market. I bought mine from the mint, but after they sold out, I tried to buy a set for my brother, who forgot to order his. For the next year, I never saw a set go for less than $175 compared to the Mint's price of $65 (I think).

Unfortunately, eBay greed has ensured that many things will sell out that wouldn't ordinarily, and you will never get a reasonable price on it after that.

No such luck, but thanks for the suggestion. Everyone else must be trying the same thing now.

Now the web page is saying:

Glad I am sitting this one out image

Sure, they may go up a bit, but if gold does go down, some people will be selling and I don't think the numismatic value will stay up there for these (I could be wrong).
If I am right, I saved myself money. If I am wrong, I am no worse off than I am today.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

I think you may be partially correct, bcdad. That's why We are Speculating. Time will tell, and perhaps I'll be wrong again. Let's hope so. Are the HUNT brothers still in the HOARDING mode ? They could drive them down further image

Speculating on a silver dollar commem is a little easier on the wallet. I've ordered an extra or two at times for a quick resale that essentially ends up paying for my keeper.

Not gonna do it with an $800 coin. I'll leave the supply alone for braver speculators and people who want one for their collection - if there even is a chance of a sellout. We'll see. Good luck to you trying to grab the order today. Wait until 7 pm or so tonight and I bet you'll get on the Mint site with no problems. At least that's what I found the last few frustrating release days.

I still haven't ordered my UNC version from a bullion dealer. I'll wait until they are shipping or available in a shop (or maybe the Baltimore show) and hope gold comes down a little by then.

Just got through on the site and ordered. The delivery date is 7/13/06. Took much longer than the the Franklin Comemms to order. For the Franklins I got through in 37 minutes, for the Buffalo it took 1-1/2 hours. I think it will be a sell out.

Got one ordered on the website. Slow, but it made it. Only one glitch, but luckily it didn't make me start all over again.
When I entered my personal information it said something about my nickname didn't match what was entered. In the first place, I don't have nickname, in the second place, there is no space on the order form for a nickname to be entered.

I simply hit the continue button a second time and it went to the payment page. Order processed!

Never did get through on the 800 line.

"In order to ensure the broadest and most fair access to United States Mint products, a limit of 10 units per order and per household is in effect. Accordingly, all orders for American Buffalo Gold Proof One Ounce Coins will go immediately into a backorder status to ensure compliance with this policy. This quality assurance process should not impact the estimated delivery time. The United States Mint may reevaluate this limit and either adjust or remove it at any time."

    I couldn't afford 10 anyway.

Agreed. What do you think buyers will pay if it sells out. With the Silver Dollar Bisons, the markup was about 300-400% and really never dropped below 300%. Are buyers willing to pay $2,000 for one of these if they sell out? How greedy will Ebay price gougers be? Will they take $1,000? $900? $875. I always love to see those vultures who hoard them from the mint get stuck with inventory that won't sell. We shall see.
