Need some help/advice on choosing a coin

My father passed away in February and for my birthday my mother wants to give me $200 to buy a coin for my birthday and I’d like to buy something sentimental to remember my father by. He liked Football, old westerns and a good beer can anyone help me or suggest a coin that may go along those lines; I mostly collect modern junk/stuff (which I like). Also might be an idea, something to do with father or family. I appreciate any suggestions or ideas

Thank You
Jj

Sorry to hear of your loss. Why don't you look at a nice coin from his birth year?

Check out some of the Wisconsin Civil War Store Cards. I know there are a number of beer/lager tokens- offhand, I'm thinking Schlitz and Blatz. Whenever I see those tokens it always brings a chuckle and a smile to my face.

Given the $200 limit, the most impressive item from 1938 would be the 1938 Walking Liberty half dollar.

So far as a western theme goes, you might consider a 1938 Oregon commemorative half dollar. It's got a great looking Indian on the obverse and a covered wagon on the reverse, but you probably could not get any better than an MS-63, maybe an MS-64. There was also a '38 Texas, but that one would probably be too expensive.

I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

These are all classic commems dating 1938. They all kind of have that old west appeal to them.

I like that 1938 Oregon commemorative half dollar. A question, what is the 38 Texas you refer to? I have 2 1938-D walkers I paid quite a bit for

I still would like opinions if anyone has one about ideas also

    Thanks Jj

You could probably pick up a 1938 Oregon Trail Commemorative Half Dollar from either the Philladelphia, Denver or San Fran. mint in the MS63 range for $200. The Texas Commemorative Half Dollar celebrates the 100th anniversary of the it's independance, it's quite a popular coin. You can grab the Texas coin in the high AU range (AU58ish) for the $200 budget.

As far as online locations to get these, others here can help you out much more than I. There are some folks on this board that are seriously into the commems.

I have an almost complete set of buffalo nickels that came from him as well as the belt buckle he gave me that had buffalo and liberty nickels glued to it, one of them is a 1937 but anymore than that is glued to the buckle. What would a 1938 buffalo nickel in ms 64 ms 65 go for? Might go great in my dansco.

Jj - you may have just overpaid for that coin, especially if it's raw. I hope it's a 64. A 63 is about $100 less.

    edited typo.

Based on the pic, I don't think so. I would return it asap. You may want to do a search of Heritage archives. Some very nice 63's have sold for around $150.
