Introduction.......New Member
I've just registered and just begun collecting coins again after many years. I had a collection when I was a kid which I believe my parents still have. I've convinced myself I'm doing it for my daughter who is 7.
It started innocently enough with the purchase of some gold bullion. A guy I used to work with used to get stuff from the mint so I bought a 2006 gold Eagle. Then I decided the platinum one would be a good investment.
Then I saw on the PCGS website that they listed the Indiana state quarter as a "cool" coin or something like that. I'm from the Hoosier state originally and after starting sideways at the coin, I decided it was indeed pretty cool. Then a whole bunch of money later I realized I had ordered a 2006 silver proof set from the Mint, and everything going back to 1999 from eBay to capture the whole 50 state quarters set to date. Wow, the 1999 set cost me a small fortune. Even though after perusing this website for a few days I realize owning a set of state quarters is peanuts compared to many collections, it's in many ways a cool accomplishment for me.
Then I picked up my first Morgan on eBay.
I'm not sure where to turn next, I know I need a 1998 proof set as my daughter was born in 1998 and I at least want to take it back that far. I think I'll stay near gold and want to pick up some pre-1933 stuff so investment purposes. Actually, I don't really plan to reap the benefit from buying this gold. I'd like to pass it on to my children someday.
Even though my "collection" is almost non-existant I've already got the bug and we're sifting through pocket change now and having fun. My daughter loves it. The first day we did it we found a 1950 Jefferson nickel which turned out to be worth a whole 20 cents or something but it was worth a heck of a lot more seeing my daughter realize she found something old when we were in fact looking for something old.
Sorry, I'm long winded by nature. I enjoy reading the posts here and trying to learn a thing or two.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.
I'm new here as well and I am also having a great time collecting with my young one. He gets great enjoyment from a good pocket change find. Of course us big kids do too. I like the fact that he is learning about geography, history, economics, etc. and doesn't even realize it because he is having so much fun. Welcome to the boards.

If you want a challenge try a Dansco 7070. There is one on the BST now (not mine)....Link to 7070

Book kind of beat me to it, but do a search on 7070. This is the Dansco album number for a type set have representatives of many ( not all) major coin types ( there are numerous threads on what is missing, and what is redundant)
Many members have posted their sets (I have 1 seated dollar to go- then the never ending upgrade search!).
Not to slight the others, but Bailey has a very nicely matched set.
there are many good threads with statagies and pitfalls on putting together a 7070.

Your approach to this is not without focus. On the contrary, as you state..... it is for your daughter and you are already reaping the rewards (excitement in a young one's face finding a "treasure" in a pile of money
Try not to be disheartened by what you may read on these posts on occasion, and continue learning through them.
Anyway, I just wanted to say, it was a great intro and I think you are on the right track. As you will see with coins (even though gold affects the market, almost all "GEMS" and "Rarities" grow in value just about in every sector of numismatics, be them old or new. There are a lot of CLASSIC collectors who will scoff at you paying $350+ for a MODERN PROOF SET... if they think that is bad, try the 96 prestige proof set.
Maybe I could get my teenaged daughter to babysit and your child can teach her a thing about "COLLECTIBILITY"
Welcome and enjoy !
Kind regards,
Joe
Practice makes perfect & nobody is perfect. So, practice being nobody and be perfect !
You picked the right place for good reading and advice. These threads will keep you well informed on almost all aspects of the coin hobby.

A very wise collector with an impressive collection just renamed his collection to the following: "Oro de los Ninos". If I remember correctly it means somthing along the lines of gold for my kids.
Thanks for the great post. My daughter woke up the other morning and I was sifting through coins and she was so excited she never turned the TV on or demanded breakfast. It was a great father / daughter moment that will fade in a couple years I'm sure and then I'll be where you're at. I think it's inevitable.
I'll tell you what kills me. I just moved to Japan (a la Uncle Sam) from 29 Palms California. I have a good job and have just about always just taken my pocket change and throw it into plastic jars. When it became time to move I have probably a dozen very large, very full jars of coins. If you're unfamiliar with the high desert of southern CA you'd know that there are a lot of old timers out there and a LOT of old coins spread around. My co-worker used to rave about what he found on a regular basis.
As you might have guessed by now I took all the coins to the bank and cashed them in before going through them. There had to be a cool coin or two in that mother lode.
Why'd you have to mention a 96 Prestige Proof Set? Now I have to have one!
More and more I'm digging the idea of picking up a pre 1933 gold coin every other payday while I'm overseas and just keeping those coins and passing them on to my kids. While I'm not rich, retirement is already shaping up and I think I've done a good job of planning up to now.
Thanks for the input. I appreciate it.

Never view my other linked pages. They aren't coin related.
Nice to see more newbies...I just started posting here a couple of weeks ago myself.
If you have one...check out your local dealer. Often times you can get just as good a deal from them as you can on ebay and you get to check out the coin first. Also, if your local dealer turns out to be a nice guy [mine did] they are more willing to take the time to teach you about the coins you want to collect. Beware though...my local dealer is trying to get me hooked on VAMs
...it started innocently...a '99 micro-O...then the '82 O/S VAM-3.... now I'm looking for the Top100...the horror...the horror!!!!!!!!!!

I don't know what the availability is in Japan, but at most shows here, there are a few dealers that have buckets of "n for a dollar" world coins that kids are drawn to. Cheap entertainment for them, just make sure they wash their hands after digging.
