Okay, looks like it was a 3cent nickel.

here is the thread, I'm not sure it shows a picture though, I looked at the link in the thread and saw no picture.

I think three cent nickels are notorious for this. I'm not sure why...

Yes. 1891 PF IHCs sometimes do, and they're dramatic.

Yes, but rarely. Stewart, you should try getting out more.image On second thought...image

Edited to add: Among others, I once personally saw/examined this coin/item, which I referenced in a thread here, long ago:

"A 1970 Proof set containing a nickel which displays obviously/strongly (and coolly!) clashed dies. He also has a 1971 letter from Coin World, stating that the nickel was indeed struck from clashed dies and that they planned to use the images he provided in a feature on Proof coins. Coin World followed through and displayed a photo of the nickel in their March 10, 1971 article on "People Closely Checking Recent Proof, Mint Sets."

    Business strikes, not Proof's.

I should think the thinner the coin and harder the coining material, the more likely clashes become. There are other factors at work and chance alone can sometimes play a major roll.

My understanding and experience would indicate that die clashing on 19th century proofs is very rare. From the responses I've seen from the numismatic community (on and off the boards, including the NGC boards), the coin I showed in the thread noted above is a very rare example. Yes, die clashing happened all the time on business strikes but not proofs. The Mint wanted to present as pristine a coin as possible to collectors and if clashing occurred they would try to polish it out. When the clashing was noted during the time of striking of my coin, probably a few got out but they were able to take care of the problem and polish out the rest of the clashing.
