so, anybody here still look at pocket change????

After reading a few threads here, I thought I would ask the question if folks still looked through their pocket change? One of my favorite finds was an off center lincoln cent strike. I had looked for one of thiose for years and one day, in the change, I had the off center and a blank.

Thats wht I miss about my current collecting. Now that I focus on proofs, and commems, I sometimes still miss what got me inetersted in the hobby and that was finding the "cool coin" in everyday use.

Anybody else have a similiar story? image

I still do! Found a 1930-D Penny the other day in VF.

That was nice, until I found out it's only about a $.50 coin. Sure beats nothing though!

I'm doing a bit of the opposite. I'm going thru about 5,000 circ. wheat cents now pulling
out what I want and I'll put the rest into circulation. Even coins from some nice red BU
wheat rolls that are not worth the cost to grade. If someone pulls it from circulation and
    says wow thats great. Joe

I look at every single thing that I get in change! So far, the oldest coin I have found was a full date 1918 buffalo nickel with a partial horn. So far, the greatest thing that I have found in my opinion was a red MS61 1942-d lincoln penny.
Great transaction with: Relaxn, Collectorcoins, OKCC

I regularly pull 1940's and 1950's Jefferson Nickels out of change. I also found a 1943 Lincoln from a Walmart checkout.

    Every coin, every day.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

I still do everyday. It is almost a disability because I will buy something that costs $2.05 so I can get the change. I get curious looks on the elevator when I sort through my pocket change and rotate them slowly in the dim light. If anyone looks at me bad, I just show them one of the Deleware or Nevada quarters and ask them what kind of horses they are. Occasionally, someone will bite and when they answer something goofy like arabians, or range horses...I get them back by telling them they are quarter horses. I pull the Texas quarters out to rat-hole and I hoard the Delewares because I like the design very much. I have picked out silver dimes, a couple of wheaties, a few oddities like Canadian stuff but mostly, searching change is just like scratching a coin itch...makes it go away for a few minutes. My coolest recent find was a proof '64 Roosie, someone must have broken out one of Dad's proof sets.

    Coin On!

I check all my change every day. Find wheat cents here and there, 40s and 50s Jeffersons now and then.

Nothing great, but..........experienced a nice find the other day.

I asked for the several Kennedy half dollars in the tellers tray at the local bank and while most were the usual worn early c/n Kennedys, right there in the middle of them all was a 1990 S proof!! GREAT!!

My best find in some time! So good things are still out there, just keep looking.
Enjoy each day as though it was your last.

Hell yes. Don't all collectors at least take a quick look?

Just found a wheat penny in my change, man my luck is up today.

I additionally hold on to high grade notes such as small portraits that are now hard to find. Since the new $10 came out on April 1st, I made sure to hold onto a number of crisp UNC large portrait 10s as well.

Yes. I love to look through my change. Mostly end up hoarding wheat pennies...did find a 1937 Mercury dime...but recently found a 1989-D Lincoln penny with a fatter rim (planchet?) that is more the zinc color or it's a mint error of some type...

I look at every coin I receive. I also eye the tellers' coin trays on every trip to the bank. I can't imagine anyone who calls themselves a "coin collector" doing otherwise.

My best finds so far this year are a few 40% halves, 1937 nickel in F-15, a half a dozen or so war nickels, and one 1964-D dime. Not great, of course, but lookin' is free, and face value is a reasonable price to pay. image

I always look at my pocket and this year I've found about 20 coins from 7 countries.

The best being a 1907 Indian Head cent I found in February.

I check all my change, girlfriend's, and parents. I even seperate it into cents (copper and zinc), nickels, dimes, etc. Makes stuff easier to roll later on and easy to find quarters for laundry day image I don't just check for dates either. Each coins gets a nice look over for any kind of doubling, strike thru, etc. Never know when YOU could find the next big error!

Last decent find was a 1927-D cent. Probably VG/F area. Too bad it was bent/warped.

Yes, but I don't make people in the line wait while I do it!
  • Options

I do make people wait in line while I gather my rolls and singles from the bank tellers.

However, I was knocked out cold the other day by a huge trucker waiting in line to cash his check and in a hell of a hurry.

Never-the-less, as I scraped myself off the floor and was picking up the roll of cents that had broken, I discovered several wheat cents and even found a good one, a 1950-S.

So good things do come out of bad happenings sometimes!
Enjoy each day as though it was your last.

I live in D.C. near the Embassies, and it's surprising how often I get 90% silver foreign coins in my change. Just picked up two French dimes in silver that look EF.image Guess people keep jars around with the coins and don't take them home.

When I am running low on money to purchase coins or have lots of time to waste (which happens to be quite often), I look through change and rolls from the bank. My best find in everday change has been a 1998 Wide AM Lincoln that is still red. In rolls of coins I have found some neat die breaks, rpms, off center coins, war nickels, misc silver, and even a semi-key date coin.

I almost always do. Found 3 WW2 era Nickles so far this year and maybe a half a dozen Wheaties too.

PS - Found a 1969 Kennedy out of 4 rolls from the bank this year too. Nothing to get a big jolt out of but, something out of the ordinary at least.

Yes I look every day. Not too long ago found a 1937-D lincoln cent, also found 1994-P Quarter with doubled beak and talon and some sort of incuse die marking on it. I put that one in a 2x2 cardboard holder. I put a pic of it on another thread.
