  • I will vote MS64PL. Looks like a nice one too.

I think 64PL as well. The hit on cheekbone is the only thing keeping it from a 65PL.

64PL. Good strike, probably moderate mirrors, marks down from the corner of the eye appear to be the gating factor for the grade.

I say MS 64 Stuart, very nice and solid for the grade tooimage------------BigE

    I voted for MS64.

The reeding marks on the cheekbone (prime focal area) just manage to keep it from being a 65.
The obverse mirrors don't quite look convincing enough to me to be a PL.

That said, I wouldn't be shocked if it was in a 65 or 65PL holder.
    When in doubt, don't.

64PL- the hit by the eye limits the grade, as does the cloudy fields on the reverse...... looks nice though...

62PL. The reeding on the cheekbone doesn't help. Still, nice coin.

Thanks to the 51 who have participated by voting in the 1897 Morgan Dollar Guess the Grade Poll, and to those others who have also taken the time to post their grading criteria and comments.

I will admit that this one is a bit tricky and unpredictable (and therefore fun), and that I had the benefit of knowing the PCGS grade prior to committing to purchase the coin. image

    Enjoy!! image

Thanks to all 66 forum members who participated in my latest "Guess the Grade" Poll, and also to those who took the additional time to post their grading criteria and comments.

Believe it or not this coin is an 1897 PCGS MS-61 DMPL Morgan Dollar -- Click for Auction Link

I am pretty certain that it's truly DMPL with 6-8" mirrors because it's in a fresh newly graded PCGS holder using the new stricter DMPL grading standards distinguished by the $1 denomination, as opposed to the older S$1 denomination previously used.

This edition of "Guess the Grade' certainly had a different twist than previous versions. The scanned images posted are from the original auction, and are those that I used to make my purchasing decision. My only advantage was that I already knew the PCGS grade prior to bidding.

Congratulations to MFCobra who was the only poster to get it correct. 80% of the votes were between MS-63 and MS-64 DMPL, with 6 votes for MS-65 PL and above. I would like to solicit MS-65PL or better bids from those 6 voters... image

I hope that you had as much fun and enjoyment with this one as I did. image
