To annoy true collectors. I actually have one that my dad bought when he was alive. He also thought cleaning coins was a good idea. I've got some nice orange Lincolns if anyone is interested.
When I was in college a professor told us once she had gone to a teacher's seminar when she taught in pulic schools. The subject was that elementary teachers biggest problem was the kids had no imagination. They were raised in from of color TV's and never had to visualize anything in their heads thus causing them to have very little imagination. These children are now the young people starting out in coin collecting. If they have no imagination they cannot possibly see the true beauty of a coin unless it has been painted and they can now see what is on the coin. Maybe a far fetched idea on my part but it makes sense to me.

I like that one mcmxi. You always hear collect what you like so I see no problem with the people who buy these coins. Some people don't consider American Eagles coins anyway so what's the big deal with painting them?
If someone buys something there is always someone to sell whatever they want. ebay is full of stuff that shouldn't be there but why not if someone is dumb enough to buy it.
The CCAC (or was it the CFA?) recently advised the Mint that they should begin colorizing collector coins in order to cash in on this market themselves.
Sadly, I am not joking. I truly wish I were.
Given how the current logic seems to be 'more is more' (more gold issues, more finishes, more finishes for the more gold issues, etc.) I'd say there is a good chance this will happen in the near future.
Oh how I long for the days when the issue was as simple as 'Grant w/ Star, Grant w/o Star.'
I have a few Maryland quarters that are colored that I am putting into an all encompassing collection. It's more of a "collector junk" addendum to my Maryland exonumia. When I get organized I will post the collection so far.
On eBay, you can get them for near nothing (the true value) from the people who thought they were worth something when THEY bought them.
I agree they colored coins are made for suckers who will pay a premium but I'll admit that I have seen a few that were somewhat attractive.

<< <i>colorized coins have to be the ugliest things since the special olympic comms! >>
If they didn't sell well, they wouldn't be produced. Some ignoramuses are paying good money for them.

Because there are idiots out there who will buy them at a premium over face or melt.
