OLD COMMEMORATIVE'S
Hi,
I'm just getting back into collecting coins in the last year and a half or so and really like the OLD commems. I've probably bought about half of the different silver types...(not the really expensive ones yet, ie hawaii, sante fe, hudson, etc) My best buy was probably a MS-64 or 65 Isabella Quarter that I purchased on E-bay for $400(at least I hope it grades that high since I haven't sent into NGC yet... local dealers and members of coin club think that it is MS-64 but you never know) If it does grade out at 64 or 65 that would be my most valuable coin to this point. I also have about 4 of gold commems which are also interesting. I now have about 30 to 40 raw silver commem's and 40 graded commem's(most are PCGS or NGC, one ICG, and a couple PCI and NNC) If I can ever learn how to photograph them I will post pics eventually, haven't figured out with my current camera. If anyone else is into colleting these please continue post with pictures or your interests.

Fatman,
Now those are some really nice looking commem's... especially like the rim toning ones.
Most of the PCGS and NGC graded I have are either MS-64 or MS-65
Isabella- anacs ms-60--- not MS- definitely hairlines.
NGC- AU 53
Lafayette NNC MS-64 --- Maybe a MS 61 or 2
Bridgeport NGC MS-65
Cleveland ICG- MS-65
Connecticut PCI MS-65 Actually looks MS-65(maybe try crossover)
Delaware PCGS MS-64
Gettysburg NGC MS-64
Iowa PCGS- MS-65 and MS-63(2 coins)
Lexington MS-65 NNC (really looks 64 or 65)
Lincoln NGC MS-64 (looks MS-63)
Long Island PCI MS-64
Lynchburg PCGS MS-64
Maine PCGS MS-64
Maryland PCGS MS-64 (old holder and very nice toning)
Monroe NGC Ms-63
Oregon 1938 NGC- MS-65
Pan Pac 50 cent NNC MS-63
Robinson NGC MS-63
San Diego 1935 NGC MS-65
Stone Mountain NGC MS-65 and MS-64
Texas NGC MS-65
York NGC MS-65
Roanoke ANACS MS-65/64- pre-holder days

The set remains a work in progress. Still have many to go.

Maybe it is time to send in all those raw Commems, along with the cracked out lower tier slabbed ones, which most consider raw coins anyway. Buying raw Classic Commems is a big gamble if you eventually want them encapsulated by PCGS or NGC. Have fun.

LeeG,
Thanks and that is one very nice Roanoke, love the obverse toning. Where is best and most reasonable place to buy commem's. So far I've bought most through E-Bay. Live in Pittsburgh PA area.
Along with information from this forum, I'd recommend picking up a few books about the Early Commems. Among my favorites are:
"The Encyclopedia of United States Silver & Gold Commemorative Coins 1892 to 1954" by Anthony Swiatek and Walter Breen
"An Illustrated History of US Commemorative Coinage" by Don Taxay
and "Commemorative Coins of the United States - A Complete Encyclopedia" by Q. David Bowers.
I look forward to seeing images of your coins in the not to distant future.

I've purchased mine from:
Mark Feld, Wayne Herndon, and ANR. You'll "Never" be disappointed in any purchase from these three
Good Luck in your search. Always hold out for the best example you can afford with non disposable income.
WOW.. another great set, very high grades... how long did it take you to collect them?? Thanks for the info, I already have one of the books but will find the others. Thanks everyone for all the input so far.
