Nice coin, but what's up with the Alien between the first and second I?...Mike

p.s. I'm no authority, but I would guess that that coin was dipped and retoned in an album.

I like yours. Here's my only one image

  • The toning looks very natural. The coin has an overall attractive look.

That's a nice one Carl. The points of the stars look fairly strong on the obverse.

What's going on in between the first and second I on the Rev? Is that strikethrough. It reminds me of the alien in the day the earth stood still.

It looks like a strong MS64.

  • The "alien" between the first and second I on the reverse is proof we are not alone in the universe. As such this coin is very rare and worth a healthy premium. image

Seriously I think it is a planchet flaw. The strike is better than average and better than the other coins available to me at the time. This is graded MS 64 by PCGS.

I think I can do better with the photos. The color at the rim is a bit lighter than in these photos. There is a hint of light blue in the lower left obverse. Did you ever take a photo and were very happy with it then the next time you looked at it and the coin you didn't like the photo as much anymore? That is what happened here...
  • Nice one Carl...that Alien is really freaky!!!!!! image

You are right, Carl, this is a better strike than you often see on Type II silver three cent piece. Congratuations! It's a nice coin!

For what it's worth I think that the coin was dipped years ago and has now toned to what a dealer I knew from the Boston area used call "original now." There is nothing wrong with that because the surfaces of the piece have not altered.

Here's the coin in my type set. It's well struck and has luster, but has obviiously been dipped white. It's in a PCGS MS-63, I believe, because of the dipping. It was the right coin for me because I didn't want to pay over $1,000 for the type. I got into this one for half the price of an MS-64. We all have our budgets and priorities.

This one is well struck for a Type II Three Cent piece AND the date. Among the all the Type II, it's been my observation that 1858 is the worst struck of the group.

Here's one that looks very similar to yours. An 1857, another Type II, also in 64. Agree with others that 3CS that look like this are an old cleaned and retoned with the blotchy toning. They tend to lack a bit of luster, thus limiting their grade to 64, maybe 65 on a good day for a nice one. On strike, I haven't yet picked up on whether any Type IIs are better than others.

Some refer to overgraded slabs as Coffins. I like to think of them as Happy Coins.

I was befuddled by the "alien" you guys were talking about. Then suddenly, he stepped forward. image

    That is freaky!

    I agree. It's a beautiful coin though.
