Anyone buy a coin collection or set in a Cherry Wood box?

What does a Cherry Wood Box do to a coin that has been left in that box for 15 years?
Does it develop toning of some kind, what exactly does it do? Anyone know?

I have several (4 & 6 piece US mint sets) and have not noticed any change in the coins in the box.
  • How old are these sets? How are they placed in the boxes, are they in plastic?

Dunno, but I asked the folks at the PCGS table at FUN if their wooden presentation box presented any longterm hazard to the coins and they seemed to think my question was ridiculous. So I assumed they don't put their most informed staff at the table sometimes at least. One would hope they are inert.

  • Well the reason I asked is because I bought a couple of unc sets back around 1999 and some of the coins are taking on the blueish tent of the felt like holder that holds the coin and the plastic holder...some are also redish...it is an all over surface tent not a bullseye or cresent...I would say these sets date back to the late 70's...so they have been in there for some time...I took them out and put them in my albums.

I have a 1988 Olympic 4 coin set in a cherry wood box and they haven't toned an iota. Also had a Constitution 4 coin set that was sold and they were not toned.

Ditto (except mine is the 6 piece)

It's not the box, it's the felt (& the toning you describe is known to happen).

    I listen to your voice like it was music, [ y o u ' r e ] the song I want to know.

I'd give you the world, just because...

Speak to me of loved ones, favorite places and things, loves lost and gained, tears shed for joy and sorrow, of when I see the sparkle in your eye ...
and the blackness when the dream dies, of lovers, fools, adventurers and kings while I sip my wine and contemplate the Chi.

Exactly. The felt is a killer.
