Point #3

Bank employee instruction per Homeland Security?

Anyone here an employee who could confirm? On second thought, I guess you couldn't (in print) if you were.

Interesting times we live in.

    Thats cute...

I think Ill take that risk, thats a whole different story if the government were to try and keep private property from an individual.

Sounds like a Doom N' Gloom scenario cooked up by some conspiracy buff who's got an axe to grind, or perhaps a few screws loose.

(However, some of it is plausible enough to be scary- a little. That's the idea, I suppose. Wooo. Scary scary.)

(moment while i create the website thanks)

so, our govt is going to pick the locks on 1000000 safety
deposit boxes huh? oh yea. that should cost about 10 dollars
    to swing.

edited to add: oh i see, they are not going to examine the contents,
they will simply put an agent at every bank location with safety
deposit boxes. that costs a bit more, 20 dollars.

Since points #1 and #2 are pure fantasy, or fantasy mis-readings of real information, why would we assume #3 is factual?

I'm a branch manager for a fairly large bank in the Northeast and that is the first I've heard of this. Bank policy prevents employees from knowing what is in customers safe deposit boxes. A lot of times customers refuse to use the private room provided and open their boxes in the vault in front of employees. I try to leave the vault or at least look away. We generally get an idea but we don't know what is in there image
If if we know there is cash in there we don't say anything to the Fed.

That's why I put a question mark on the link header.

Ignore or whatever. However, this Iranian oil bourse opens in March and that is a fact. Nothing says that the Iranians won't ALSO accept dollars. So it should not be doomsday. But it would be if they declined dollars. Which they probably won't.

I do know one thing. If the US was trying to buy a used car and needed a credit report they would be turned down. Being able to PRINT money would be the only reason to make the loan.

We have a negative personal savings rate and that is bad. And that is a fact.

I too searched a lot of key words to verify from any other source than this doomsday thing and found nothing.

However, the FACT remains that it was done before and it CAN be done again. Assess risk.....act accordingly. Personally this week I acted like Emeril and kicked my home alarm up 2 notches...BAM! One I won't disclose and the other is adding a portable silent panic button. Nominal cost and extra peace of mind. I also have a safe deposit box.

If Homeland Security ..... DID...... (and I'm not saying they will) want to restrict access to boxes in a national financial emergency, I'm sure they could find local officers who would be only too glad to assist them. Or they could arrange "convenient appointments" for those who wish to remove contents. Shoot, nobody keeps ESSENTIALS in a SDB.

Just a heads up for the gang.

If you look at the subtle signs and the not so subtle signs of what has transpired in this country during the last 10-15 years then it might be wise to be very concerned about the safety & security of any undocumented wealth.

As for me, I have no wealth so I have no concerns.

Personally, if the us experienced financial collapse, a safety deposit box is where I would want my valuables. When the looting began they would be safe.

I think if the US made all US currency outside the US debased or worth nothing, it would close down the counterfeit operations and those countries that hold it would be in a bind. When they found Saddam, he has US currency, not gold or silver or euros!

So a French "chicken little" website is warning us about our economy? That's rich - Have you seen the condition of the French economy (or the entire EU for that matter?)

Congress will increase the debt ceiling if necessary, the world will continue to buy our T-Bonds (no safer investment anywhere), and your safety deposit box is as safe as it ever was. We will face economic problems in the future, particularly entitlements, but we'll solve them and our economic engine will continue to chug along.

While there are some interesting thoughts in this article.... I took most of the article for what it is worth after reading the first sentence.... "In its attempt to establish a world empire dominating every nation on the planet, ...." After reading this sentence, it was very apparent that this was just another bash the U.S., bash Bush, etc. However.... there is no doubt in my mind that the economy is very unsettled, our debt is way to high, and on and on..... Be prepared for about anything..... diversify!

Siezing the boxes would be easy and not take much in the way of resources at all. Just take a lesson from FDR. On Saturday evening the President addresses the nation and declares a bank holiday. The banks will not reopen until say Thursday. This gives them time to contact all the banks and pass on instructions that customers may not access their boxes. Then you just send a round a federal agent to each bank (and since you won't have enough you just swear in local law enforcement officier temporarily as Homeland Security agents) And they just go to each bank to observe the opening of the boxes, confiscate what is being confiscated, and issue receipts.

It's not like is has to be accomplished overnight or in just a couple days. The bank can reopen, they just can't let anyone into the vault where their box is. So there is plenty of time. For those people who HAVE to get access to important papers stored in the boxes, they can apply to the bank for same. They turn their key over to the Bank and the Bank opens the box, makes a COMPLETE inventory of its contents an turns over the requested documents, duly noted in the inventory.

If it turns out that people were given access to their boxes then the bank employees are held responsible as being in violation of Presidntial order Blah Blah Blah, minimum five year prison term. That should cut way back on unauthorized access.

Now I'm not saying that I believe any of that stuff or that they plan on doing it, just that that is how they COULD go about doing it.

Will they resell what they take? Probably. Is it just outright stealing? Yes, and your point is? Besides it isn't really, they gave you a receipt! And that plus a dollar will buy you a double cheseburger at McDonalds.

It's much more likely they'll just make it where all sales are 1099. You won't be able to deal goods without collecting 1099 data from your customer.

Then the IRS can collect taxes on everything ever sold, and the states & locals can collect sales tax on everything ever sold. Plus, the purchaser can't hide, he'll be paying school property tax on everything ever bought.

Think you can install a new 37" HD TV without paying more school tax? Think again.....the value of your property has risen.

<< <i>In its attempt to establish a world empire dominating every nation on the planet >>

    ...

Read "Empire of Debt" by Bill Bonner and Addison Wiggin. The discussion on what constitutes an empire may be somewhat of interest. That said, I'm thinking that website (now that I've finally gotten around to looking at it from my home computer) is perhaps a bit inflammatory.

Whatever anyone's own conclusions are, some of us buy bullion as a 'hedge' against many things...including perhaps a significant change in the way the world is run, our country included. Just food for thought. For the record, I'm more interested in using bullion as a more traditional hedge against falling dollars and rising rates, and my 'stuff' goes to the bank.

for what it's worth, I do see the collapse of the credit market bubble coming, especially when you really see how much outstanding debt we have... it's gone from 12 trillion in 1990 to 20 trillion in 1997 to 38.8 trillion in the latest quarter.
This debt growth must keep rising and the instant it can't any longer, the house of cards collapses. The unknown for me is if the collapse is deflationary or hyperinflationary.. my guess.. deflation first, hyperinflation second.

On the list of things I'm concerned about, the security and ownership of the contents of my safe deposit boxes doesn't even register in the top 10. Even if they were confiscated, it's just stuff. If things got so bad in the USA that that happened, I'd probably be long gone to Australia. image

Not if the President signs a Presidential Order mandatig it. See FDR, 1933. If they can declare a bank holiday once, they can do it again.
