Petition for a World & Ancient Coins Buy, Sell & Trade forum (this thread was from 2006!)
I would type up a nice, eloquent proposal here for everyone to sign on to, but you guys already know the deal. This post is just for added exposure. We've talked about it most recently in this thread, and several times before. I think it's about time us Darksiders get our own BST forum here at PCGS.
It is not a terribly difficult endeavor for the administrators. We are a largely self-policing lot so any frauds would likely be exposed without need for intervention, and thus little liability to PCGS. Bandwidth and space usage issues could be minimized by automatically deleting threads in the BST after a month. Etc, etc.
Why not do it?!
Add your name here if you'd like to see a World & Ancient Coins Buy, Sell & Trade forum here at PCGS!
Please do include any thoughts/comments. Would you be likely to sell here? Do you regularly buy from users here? Let PCGS know this will be appreciated! ~~ Good business for them, good business for us!

63 in favor of the World & Ancient Coins Buy, Sell & Trade forum (counting favorable comments without definite Yeses as implicit agreement) and two expressing thoughtful reservations at the time of the last edit.
Even if you're not a regular poster, even if just a lurker, or someone who would simply like to buy, or to sell your coins to the large audience here... please do feel free to add your name!

I'd give the weekly swap thread one more shot accompanied by clear guidlines on the appropriateness of SSP threads.
I would suggest:
No SSPs from full time dealers (or quasi-dealers such as myself) without a solid giveaway.
No SSPs from infrequent posters (hard to define, I know).
Yes SSPs from occasional sellers moving stuff from their collection (like 1jester recent TT SSP)
Yes SSPs from virgin sellers but frequent posters (the recent book thread comes to mind).

I vote YES!
Imposing definite rules for this forum seems a bit too labor intensive. The best we can hope for is an implied etiquette, the breaking of which would be penalized by the stigma of the community. (That is, when a spammer gets no sale out of a tasteless SSP, he should learn not to do it.)
Hopefully having a separate World/Ancient BST would provide an outlet for anyone with such inclinations as to spam this forum.
The old-timers here--and newbies too!--selling off their collections likely can wait for the weekly thread to make their announcement. Barring that, I should think a nice, wordy post on what they are doing would not be offensive to the group. Afterall, it's the folks who say things like "Churchill for SALE! $20 LQQK!" that annoy us. We all enjoy (wrong word, I know!) lamenting the sale of another's cherished coin. So those one-off SSPs are acceptable. It's the disconnected, heartless prostitution of coins that gets aggravating. If you're to do a one line SSP, don't waste a whole thread for it! That's what a BST forum or Swap thread is for!

Now, that being said, isn't it the reality that PCGS makes a helluva lot more money from litesiders than from Darksiders? I see a ton of regular submitters on the liteside, and very few here. Perhaps that's why the liteside dominates the current BST forum.
I do think it would be a nice gesture on the part of PCGS to add a Darkside BST Forum (hint hint) as that MIGHT encourage more Darksiders to submit for grading (if that's thier bag) to PCGS instead of those "other places". Just my two baht's worth

But in principle, I'm for a separate Darkside BST board too.
edited to add that it would be a nice gesture in memory of Frank too.

<< <i>Sadly, the offenders who would most benefit from reading this thread are the people least likely to do so... >>
The only ones who need to learn anything from this thread are the mods with the power to make it happen
The SSP abusers will learn in due course.
And, since my language thus far has fairly abstracted the point, the reason a Darkside BST should be created is not solely our annoyance with SSP abusers or spammers. We don't want to create a separate BST simply to serve them; that's not in the interests of us or PCGS.
What we want is a place to trade fairly amongst each other, one not dominated by things that give us no interest.

I'm sure they do make more from Lightsiders, that's only natural in this US market. But PCGS would be remiss to not cater as fully to the World Coin market when the only action asked for to however slightly improve conditions is as simple as adding another forum to the database. Just as it is common that the US market takes the dominant share of PCGS's business, it is that NGC takes the dominant share of World coin business. Perhaps being more open to this market and encouraging the community's participation would improve their shares!

The internet has had a significant impact on the exchange of information, commerce and it has even made the world a smaller place in terms of the ability to market services and communicate. The key word here to some may be the internet, but in fact it is the world. There are collectors everywhere and looking toward the future is not just the potential to reach 2 to 3 million US collectors, but 8-15 million world collectors, and possibly many millions more, is the wave of the future.
CU needs to look towards the future and not what has already been done. The time has come for a World/Acient Buy-Sell-Trade Forum. Such a move would truly speak volumes of the interest that PCGS should have in a truly amazing arena of coin collecting that has nothing but potential... just think of China, Japan, India, France, Great Britain and Germany... Russia, Poland, Norway, and all the countries of Central and South America and I could go on all night but this has to end and the point has been expressed with a degree of optimism worthy of an affirmative response from the CU decision makers...
Experience the World through Numismatics...it's more than you can imagine.
I would really love to see a World & Ancient Coins Buy, Sell & Trade forum.
I would also very likely to sell on the forum before putting on Ebay.

This is another good point here! The arena of World coin collecting is HUGE! It is filled with collectors just as passionate as those domestic collectors in the US. The prices may not be as atmospheric at the moment, but the potential is being realized. What we ask for is not separate BSTs for Canada, China, Germany, etc, etc, but simply one for the the whole World in one! Not that much, really.

* I did a quick check of a few pages. The W&AC forum is not 25% SSPs or anything near it. I looked at the data: 14 SSPs (including 2 weekly swap threads) since January 30 , or 9.5%.
* There is very little abuse of the SSP. Even the people who were accused as such in the other thread are in my opinion not abusers (perhaps they could have consolidated the SSPs into one thread each, that would have been fine). This alone does not justify the need for a separate forum.
* I prefer one stop shopping for SSPs and good posts.
* Based on what I read on that other thread, this solution fails to address the problem.
* Wait a minute - what exactly is the problem we are trying to solve with this proposed solution?? What is the gap we are trying to close?
From my own POV I do not believe we have a real problem here on the Darkside with SSP posts. I just didi a quick scan and according to my math about 10% of posts are SSP in nature. While I can understand the desire not to see the darkside turned into a free-for-all of spam, I do not think we are in any danger at this time.

I have purchased coins from some of the reg's here and would again.
I also would list some very low end (and priced) coins if there was a special forum for BST. I do not like to add any of the lower grade coins I have to offer into the current formum and muddle up the works more.
Not sure if that was clear, and maybe too self serving, but there you have my
