Low grade, rare date gold has quite a certain charm to it, IMHO.

I have no problem with that grade--except that when I usually see (or submit) a Dahlonega or Carson City coin that is known to be poorly struck graded by PCGS, it is graded against a Philly coin, while this one is clearly graded against like coins. Inconsistent!
Due to the 55-C's notoriously weak strike, crappy planchets and general lackluster workmanship at the mint, I would grade it F-15 overall.
BUT,
Due to today's grading trends....
It's a PCGS VF-20 or an NGC VF-30 anyday.
However, PCGS managed to grade this coin VF20 which to me seems a gift. But this may be considered within the subjective variances of grading. However my concern is that all too often PCGS doesn't correctly consider strike characteristics of the date when grading southern gold. This contributes to the gross inconsistencies in PCGS grades for southern gold. This coin could have just as easily been graded by the grader of the day as a VG8. And that range of VG8 to VF20 seems too great when sometimes big time money is on the line.
Of course I share my opinion with the disclaimer that this evalutation is from an image, and images don't always tell the complete story. Thanks for your comments.
