How hard do you find it to locate coins on your want list?

Sometimes it takes me FOREVER to locate a satisfactory coin on my list. Some of these coins aren't even that rare. What has your experience been like and where do you go to find these coins?

  • Really not much luck here lately(last couple of months) for seated half material.... especially PCGS coins. No bargaining from the dealers that I have made contact with even when the coins are not that special. And collectors aren't making it any easier in the auctions. I'm pretty much sidelined and tempted to sell if this is the trend.

It ain't hard to find 'em--it's hard to pay for 'em!!
  • Since i collect pcgs au58 walkers that are true au58 i find it very hard.
once you get past the common dates they never show up.
i think they get cracked and sold as "RAW" to the unsuspecting collector.

Depends on the want list. I have some coins that I have not located in years.
Maybe there is a website that surveys all auctions and a large number of dealers websites.
If not it would be an interesting entrepreneurial venture.

  • I'm in a holding pattern for most of my collecting interests. I'm relatively young and believe I will by far outlive the bubble. The only coins I'm really buying right now are PCGS PR69DCAM 1979 examples. I was cruising right along in that set until I hit the lincoln cents. Lincolns being so popular make for high prices, but on top of that the availability is scant. That suprised me. Nine times out of ten when I search ebay for "1979 PCGS" the number on cents available in PR69DCAM is zero. Seriously. I'm aware there are other places to buy coins, but this is just an example.
  • I'm finding it difficult to get the grade that I want for a currently modern coin.
There are some gaps in dates but I'm not willing to pay those extremely high prices for the moderns.
I don't want to sacrifice the quality of the grade .......so I wait patiently. I check the Bay of E and Teletrade.

For some coins I have searched for years before I found them. The thing to do is to have a fairly wide list so that you don't get too bored.

BUT after looking for years, I usually know right away when it's time to pull the trigger. image

As for want lists as a dealer, want lists have been my bread and butter since I got into the business. Some dealers don't bother with them, and finding a dealer who has your same tastes and will work to find the right coin can hard. That's why want list service works for me. Most dealers don't provide great service in the area. They are more interested in buying and selling quickly.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

My want list just keeps on growing and growing, but the cash supply is staying the same so.....

I am setting my eyes on finally getting that PCGS MS-62 Liberty QE, now I just have to find a nice one and a nice one for the money and nab it.....

No luck so far either they are ugly or overpriced for the coin imo.....

AMEN!!! I guess the key word is "satisfactory". I've seen many dates/grades that fit my sweet spot, but for one reason or another, they don't pass my own criteria for the grade.

This is an excellent question posed, brccoins.... I rather like majorbigtime's answer.

I usually find what I want and then put my finger on the trigger ever so carefully...almost squeezing, but just not enough to close the deal. My hands get all sweaty and my blood starts rushing and then I just say "NO". Then it starts over about an hour later. This goes on throughout the day and night. I lose sleep over it, often times....

I've found it fairly tough. Most of the things I'm looking for are not particularly expensive -- they are neither in high grade nor in heavy demand -- but they are pretty uncommon, and the people who have them tend to keep them.

I have been looking for a long time to fill a few spots. The spots are common dates but none are on the market. In fact I have seen more of the impossible dates at high prices than I have of the ones I am looking for. image
  • Some great responses have been posted. Do you think you just arent looking in enough places? Or do you simply not have the time to search?

If it was easy to find, it wouldn't be on a want list.
