How optomistic am I here with the value of this collection?

DNADaveDNADave Posts: 7,350 ✭✭✭✭✭
I don't think for a second I could sell it for the "coin prices" value, but how much above what I paid do you think it may go? if anything?

I guess it all depends on what the coins look like.

Where did you get your current value prices from?
Put them up for sale at those prices and see what sells.

I'm not sure that I would expect to get $3600 for a 93-s in vg10 in anacs plastic.

I too am curious as to how you arrived at your pricing. Is the first column what you paid for the coins or someone else told you that is what they paid? Are the prices from the greay sheet, Red Book, other sources? Why are you tryig to dump all these anyway?
Why not just put them all up on ebay or take to a coin show to sell? Why not go to the buy, trade forum here and try to sell them? Are these all slabbed coins that are still in the slabs?

He never implied that he is/was trying to sell these. He is just trying to put a current value on them for whatever reason. Usually they say that if you want to see what something is worth that you should try to sell it. Unless you can reach most of the market you don't really know for sure.

yep, thats an AG3 but I did get a good offer for it already image

The reason for this post is that my wife is really on my a$$ for buying the last coin on that list today. I tried to tell her that in the long run my coin purchases were doing pretty good and that I'd likely make money IF I decided to sell. Sometimes I think I might just like to sell 'em all, pay off the car loans, and start again.

I'm fortunate in that my wife understands that I believe in the continuous acquisition of choice pieces over time, regardless of market spike or valley, and that in the future we may end up with a healthy collection.

the problem with that scenario is that unless the market tanks big time you will have a hard time replacing many of them for what you currently have in them.

I guess it all depends on what the coins look like.

There in lies the key to the answer ... however, in a slow but not studious run down of your coins, unless you have a lot of dogs and/or just "handed them over" to a buyer, I think you would probably recover all of your cost ... and might even make ~15% depending on how you sold them.

    That's my WAG anyway ...

I'll comment on some of the prices that I am most familiar with, prices on widget MS Morgans. These three are optimistically high.

$36 for a 1879-S ANACS 63 and 1880-S ANACS 63 is more like it, unless they are spectacularly toned. On a good day someone can get them for less than that. Most dealers probably would offer about $25 each for these two. If that is a typo and it is an 1878-S (not 79-S), that would be about $10 more in value. For the 1882 CC ANACS 62, $170-$175 is more realistic selling on Ebay, and wholesale would be about 20% less than that. Again, I am thinking about middle of the road coins, no unsightly problems, no spectacular toning.

Buying a set of Greysheet/Bluesheets might give you a better idea of wholesale (bluesheet) and retail (greysheet ask) on your coins. This costs $14 for a current set, and a person can probably can get a three month old set for less from a subscriber on BST. ANACS coins over $500 in value tend to be harder to move. If and when you get a bluesheet, you will see this reflected in the sight unseen values listed.

Someone could go through the entire list and give you a play-by-play. The perceived quality or the lack of quality for the grade can easily swing the price by 50%. This can make or break you, especially on the higher priced items. My guesstimate is that you might be about 10% ahead if you take the trouble to retail the coins via Ebay or the like, and about 15% down if you had to wholesale them to a dealer.

You're going to sell your coins and then buy pretty much the same stuff all over again? Cool! Twice as much profit for us coin dealers!

It's difficult to say what return you would get.

Coin for coin, some might be PQ for the grade and some may not be.

If you sold 'em all........in 1 shot....to one Dealer.....

    I'd guess......now it's just a guess.......

    ........and I ain't that sophisticated.........

You might realize 10 to 15 percent.

    Prices are up right now.
