The next time your dealer says he has a "monster" deep cameo for you, compare it to this o

That's what a REAL monster DCAM looks like. Sad thing is that in this label driven market it's not worth much to most people since it's graded PR67DCAM. An ugly PR69DCAM would bring 10x as much.

That's super for a 69, but the 80s tend to be better:

    It's undergraded by a point; expected 68DCAM.

How much of your pic is lighting & color contrast (photoshop) on the pic though? There seems to be a few dark lines/spots in the frost which is kind of weird...

I don't own photoshop. The only editing was cropping and resizing.

Not weird at all. It's quite common on the 1969-S proof Kennedy.

it's really a toss-up trying to compare this coin with one graded 69. it may indeed win the prize for the heaviest frost, but once i get past that it has some distractions. i've made coins with less frost, mirrors clear as glass and no spotting, tone spots or cloudiness whatsoever which graded 69DCAM. i also have coins which have single spots which hold them at 68DCAM, yet they're more eye-appealing than some 68's. i guess it all comes down to what we prefer the most. with all that said, your coin might be a "monster" in terms of one aspect yet it's a loser in others and received a nice compromise grade.

what really drives me crazy is when i come across coins that have an obverse like this and a reverse which is brilliant.image

I think it could have gone Pr68, but I see some tarnish along with a posible cleaning.
Deep cameo contrast is not the question, a couple of nicks here and, there may have had the greater impact on the grade.

Not lint marks. They're tiny frost breaks, which is a characteristic of some of the 1969-S dies.

If you could find a 1964 AH Proof with that degree of frostiness, deep watery black mirrors, no frost breaks, no haze, no hairlines, no marks or dings, with a complete strike, and with the rims being thick, centered and of even width around the entire coin, do you think PCGS would dare to grade it 69DCAM?

Also, what would you be willing to pay for it if you had a chance to buy it (give us a dollar figure and not a generic statement of "the smallest amount the seller would take").

Hey Russ, over the weekend I picked up a 1969 Proof set on the cheap ($8.00) that has a very nice half. I dredged up your earlier thread with your picture of a DCAM 1969 half to compare with my new purchase.

My own experience with 1969 halves is that DCAMs look like the one you pictured in this post. The frost is so thick it looks like it is artificially applied to the coin after striking. Further there is usually some chatter on the devices that interrupt the frost (like that present on the pictured coin). Further, on occassion the frost is not uniform/even in intensity and/or color (sometimes it appears yellow in patches).

The 1969 half I picked up over the weekend looks (IMO) to be DCAM, however it does not have the same appearance that the half pictured in this post has. Instead, it has smooth, uniform, thick white frost on the devices on both sides. It has no chatter on the devices. The lower portion of the raised vertical bars on the shield on the reverse shows only a very minor reduction in the intensity of the frost (frost break).

The 1969 half I acquired over the weekend looks more like one of the 1964 DCAM halves you have pictured in the past.

I have never seen any DCAM 1969 half that looks like a 1964 DCAM. What is your experience? Have I found something outside of the norm, or is this just another average coin for a common date? If you want I can try to e-mail you a pic. Thanks, SanctionII.

Russ, it sure lookls like a nice coin. Is there some grading limiting factor that warrants it being graded 67DCAM?
