PCGS and Peg Leg Ikes

There was some discussion a few months ago regarding the possibility of PCGS adding the Peg Leg Ikes to their database. This may apply to the 1971-D RDV006 as well. Is there any word on this? I have some I'm itching to submit!!!!

I do not think they made any announcement on the issue yet. However, I recently submitted 1 71S peg and 2 71D RDV-006. Got them all back slabbed and graded as I expected, although I would have been much happier with the peg grading 1 point higher. Still a nice coin though. You can post a question on the Q and A forum and David Hall will reply.

So, what do you have to submit? image

I have a pretty good run of Peg Leg's. I think I have all of the known dates (based on postings to this forum), and some are pretty nice. I seem to have better luck finding them in circulated bags, etc, than in unc rolls, unfortunately.

But, it's the thrill of the hunt.....and getting change back from a $5 for the purchase of a "find" that makes it fun. The neat thing about collecting Ikes is that you can, literally, find them anywhere! Flea markets, yard sales, whathaveyou.

For example, recently I found five rolls of 1978-D's that had been stored in tubes for years and years, and they are really gorgeous. I have a PCGS MS66 in my collection that I found in a mint set, and I'm using that to compare. There are about 8 or nine coins in the lot that are pushing that grade really, really hard. I can't wait to see how the do!

BTW, with "peg legs" being found in one form or another in just about every date of Ike's doesn't that hinder the effort to get at least one recognized? I mean, doesn't it open a pandora's box for them if they recognized the 71-S DDO-007, as described in WExler/Flynn and not the others that are being found as well?

Just an opinion but I think the delay has a lot to do with the headaches that await them if they take the punge into "peg legs".

I'm still waiting on a 78D in 66 that I can submit. All my 66s (except my 72D) have come from mint sets. image Souinds like you have allot to submit. I say submit them all now and then when they start to attribute them, pay the few dollars to have the attribution on them. In case they never do it, at least you have them certified and IKE experts will know what they are looking at. image

Good luck...and yes, welcome to the message forums, although you have been registered for a year. image

    WELCOME to the Boards!

I think that not all Peg legs are ACTUAL Die varieties....I think some are the result of die polishing and come in
varying degrees. Yet, to recognize EVERY die variety would be quite cumbersome, to say the least....much like
recognizing EVERY Vam in the Morgan Set.

    The BIG question is.....
How is PCGS going to determine which Varieties to add?

I don't know......Maybe by asking some long-time Ike collectors/"experts", or polling the top 20 or 50 (or even all) Ike Variety
Registry set owners, asking die some die expert's opinions (Like Wexler, Crawford and Flynn).
I would do something like all of those three to compile a list and see what die varieties are noteworthy
and/or desireable by the collectors and experts themselves.
Maybe by doing that, PCGS could come up with a Top-10 or Top-5 Variety list and add those to the Ike Variety Registry.

    Just a thought......image

Personally, I think that if the Speared Bison and the Wisconsin quarters can be recognized along with VAM registry sets, then why not recognize the Peg Leg IKE's? I'm sure that there are many IKE Experts out there weho can define what is and what is not a legitimate die variety. For Example, the 40% clad 72's would not qualify as virtually all of them are Peg's. This is true as well for the 72 proofs. However, the 71's, 74's, 77's and 78's should be recognized!

    JMO........
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

I think that, for any series, especially the Ikes, the varieties that are recognizable by the naked eye with normal vision, or at best, reading glasses, etc., should be considered first for inclusion in "variety" collections. That would hold true for the Types 1-2-3 1972's, and certainly for the Peg Legs. You don't need a high powered glass to see them. Now, as for some of the doubled dies and that sort of thing, that enters into a specialized field. You have to know what to look for, and certainly have to be able to SEE the varieties to appreciate them. I think it behooves the grading companies to include as many as feasible. I also think that the advanced, specialist collectors should be at the forfront of the efforts to include these varieties, again, no matter what the series might be.

Maybe a start would be for some of the recognized and respected names in the Ike Dollar arena to offer to assemble a photo database of these coins, so as to get an idea of what the population is. I would be more than happy to send photos of my coins to anyone with the resources to do just that. Besides, wouldn't it be neat to know just what's out there?

Oh, and, yeah, the more I think about it, the more I feel that I need to just go ahead and send my coins in for grading. Besides, I can't stand it much longer, 'cause they's some purty ones in there.
