The coin has been very harshly cleaned and retoned. It would be bodybagged in a heartbeat for any number of reasons, starting with environmental damage.
<< <i>I did a qiuck search of Greatsoutherncoins. Couldn't find them, but seems I heard their name here. Lots of Katrina toned coins or something.
Where are they outed as "The seller is a well known scumbag."?

Almost all of their raw coins are either AT, overgraded, or both. They get away with it becuase of thier liberal return policy -- those who figure out they got crap return the coins, but probably 90% don't know any better and keep the coins, and the seller keeps the profit. A very common coin dealing business model on the 'Bay.
This coin lends credence to why I avoid toning.... unless it happens to be stuck in an album where 70% take on the same album or tab toning, I will steer clear ... if this color were on silver it would certainly be less suspect, but on copper and of all copper pieces, a 55 DDO, well ... A thousand dollars will buy almost two ounces of gold !
It is still one numismatic piece I hope to own, one day... problem free, of course

Problem is, it's so hard to tell an AU58 from a 63 just through pictures. Guess you have to go on seller's rep, and their return policy.
Both seem to be in order here.
