eBay problem....A Canadian wins my USA only auction......

ManorcourtmanManorcourtman Posts: 8,396 ✭✭✭✭✭
Some advice on an eBay problem, please!! I sold a Canadian PCGS graded proof set yesterday on eBay. My auction clearly states I only ship to the USA. Well a guy from Canada ended up bidding/winning the auction. What will eBay do about this?? I emailed them stating the problem. Anyone else run into this problem before and how was it resolved? Thanks in advance, Chris

If the bidder is willing to pay for it - coin, shipping, insurance - why is it a problem? If it is a problem, then just file for a refund of your fees and cancel the deal. Some people just don't read everything. The ones who do read everything and just ignore it anyway, must be willing to pay any extra fees associated with additional shipping.

I'd learn what options you have for shipping/insurance, and offer to send it for the additional cost.

I use to not sell to canada but its no problem, just be sure to get paid in US funds & charge about $10.00 for s&h insured. Its really just a little more of a hassle to ship.

If he is willing to pay the shipping cost, sell it to him. The market for Canadian, Foreign and Ancient coins is mostly outside the US. You will get a lot more for your coins if you sell them outside the US. You must ship by Registered Mail only, however. Do some checking on postal regulations. Some countries have very restrictive rules about shipments containing coins or paper money.

Hey what is the big deal? It is so easy to ship international. I have had buyers in England, Canada, and Brazil. Simple to send to, I just give a qouted price for US shipping and say all others email first for actual ship cost. You just ship it insured and it is that easy, they pay for the costs.

It is easier to do you think, and they where the high bidder. So I got more $$$$.

Not true for Canada. From the USPS site:

<< <i>Coins sent to or from collectors or dealers may be mailed in ordinary (uninsured) parcel post packages. >>

Cancel his bid and tell him to read the shipping description more closely, that you ship ONLY to USA!

When you list an item you can set buyer requirements. This blocks anyone

    << <i>neg him, block him. relist >>

That sounds harsh, might subject the seller to a negative as well, will require additional work for the seller and might lead to a lower price upon relisting.

I'd be willing to ship to Canada, while requiring the buyer to pay for insurance and any additional fees.

I also don't ship outside the US, but in a case like this I'd go ahead and process the order.

What is the concern about shipping outside the US? If they pay upfront for insured shipping, then why
should I care if I ship to Italy versus Little Italy in New York?

There is no seller protection for shipments outside the US. The buyer can claim they didn't get the item - even if they did - file a chargeback and the seller is screwed. That creates a situation that is ripe for scams. In fact, the majority of the fraud attempts I get through my business originate outside the US.

Check the buyers feedback. If it's strong, you shouldn;t have an issue.

If the value of the set is minimal, should be a big deal.

I've shipped a few coins to Canada from E-Bay (all Canadian coins..go figure that) with no problems.

Russ, wouldn't that only apply to purchases through PayPal? I take payments in Int'l money orders and Western Union (via Bidpay) from foreign buyers and haven't had problems.

Correct. But, since about 90% of payments are through PayPal, it's a big concern.

I have a similar problem. My shipping instructions are specific and PayPal/ eBay preferences are set but I now have to ship smoething First Class to Hawaii and have not yet printed a label.

Is there going to be a problem here or is the postage going to be more than the $2.50 I charged him which includes insurance? This is a first!imageimage

Postage cost to Hawaii is no different than postage cost to any other state.

I've had the same problem in the past, but not since I have set my ebay Buyer Requirements.

Go to your ebay All Selling page and select more... under Related Links at the bottom of the left column. Then select Block or Pre-Approve Bidders from the Selling-Related Links list. Click buyer blocks under Buyer Block Exemption List. Select the check box to Block buyers who are registered in countries to which I don't ship.

I have the same policy as Russ for the very same reason.....PAYPAL. I have no protection against chargebacks. I very rarely sell Canadian coins so this isn't usually an issue. Since PAYPAL is the favorite form of payment these days I REFUSE to take a chance with non-US bidders. Call me conservative or narrow-minded....but my rear is covered against foreign scammers. Thanks for all the input, Chris

Yeah I learned you have to mark the "block bidders in countries I don't ship to" after a guy from Germany won a coin from me. image

you are leaving money on the table not accepting foreign bidders

you have no idea how often they bump up final values being underbidders

I do understand because I occasionally buy US coins from foreign countries

Most items I buy on Ebay from Canada have a requirement for international money orders and I do the same if a Canadian buys from me!

I have posted on all my auctions that I ship to USA only. If someone outside the USA wins, I just e-mail them and ask for extra shipping money. They usually have no problem, pay the funds, and I ship. I have shipped to England, India, Mexico, and other countries.

I have sold a lot of non-US coins on Ebay and they usually go "home".

I have had no problems with Ebay, Paypal, or the USPS in selling and shipping coins to Canada, France, Ireland, England, Switzerland, Italy, Australia, Hawaii, China, Taiwan, Japan, Lebanon, Norway, etc.

For some reason, I have had no customers "south of the border" in Mexico or any part of South America.

Exactly. Its funny how some people think that AK and HI are not states. Or that it will cost so much more to ship something. The only problem that I run into is when a business wants to ship UPS or FedEx ground.
