Orville Wright had a modest collection, now at the ANA museum -- he was once a lecturer at Colorado College next door to headquarters.

Commodore Matthew Perry had a pretty substantial collection, sold by B+M after its discovery by Eliot Goldman in the early 90s. Everything from ancient to modern. I own every Brazilian coin from his collection!

As noted before, Jefferson collected. Ancients weren't really his bag (in fact he probably bought fakes when he was in France in the 1780s), but he was an advanced medal collector. Martha Washington was fond of showing GW's medal collection off to visitors to Mount Vernon, including his massive gold Washington Before Boston medal (now in Boston Public Library) and a set TJ gave him in 1790.

Famous Italian singer Enrico Caruso had a magnificent, truly world class cabinet. Parts were sold in Italy and a part was sold by Henry Chapman. He was a real numismatist, specializing in gold from ancient to modern.

President Andrew Jackson had a small collection, and President John Quincy Adams assembled an advanced collection of ancients that was given to the Massachusetts Historical Society. JQA was one of our great scholar-presidents.

There have been too many royal collections to list, some of which are still intact. George III's collection was given to the British Museum, and includes a beautiful George Washington peace medal! King Victor Emmanuel III of Italy was a true numismatist and wrote a multi-volume set on Italian coinage.

Undoubtedly many modern celebrities collect, but they like to collect the way they like to live -- privately.

I just remembered a few more:

The director's name was Leslie Stevens (the new Twilight Zone Series)

Gordon Lightfoot - the Canadian Folk singer

Walter Matthau - only thru his attorney

Ron ?? --- a well-known Playboy Photographer back in the 1970's (he would bring in the
contact sheets from his Centerfold photo shoots!)

and one I should have remembered the first time ---

Steve Martin - he came into Jonathon's Coins, in Inglewood, around 1971.I worked there at the time for one year
before I went to work for Numismatics Ltd. (Harry Gordon) He was a writer for
the Smothers Brothers show at that time, (had white hair even then); nice guy,
quiet type............he bought coins for a short while, and then in later years progressed
into Chinese Art and porcelin vases, etc.......now a big time collector of famous paintings.

Retired Collector & Dealer in Major Mint Error Coins & Currency since the 1960's.Co-Author of Whitman's "100 Greatest U.S. Mint Error Coins", and the Error Coin Encyclopedia, Vols., III & IV. Retired Authenticator for Major Mint Errors for PCGS. A 50+ Year PNG Member.A full-time numismatist since 1972, retired in 2022.

If TV personalities count then you can add in the top POKER Players on ESPN who collect-- I know Scotty Ngygen, a World Series champion collects both Saints and older gold. Some of it he traded with the Horseshoe's Benny Benion's son before Benny died (Benny collected gold but hoarded silver). There's also a casino mogel who collects but stays under the radar for obvious reasons. Dan Harrington (one WS bracelet and final table 2 times last 3 years) and he advises his cousins-- one the number one golfer in Ireland (Padrig) and the other an NFL starting quarterback (Joey Harrington) to diversify into some gold and coins--image

It has only been since 1965 that moderns have been so reviled.

Throughout history many collectors set aside or collected at least a few of the current coins.

It's ironic that some of the rarest coins in the future will have huge mintages.

This applies primarily to world coins because many of these were also ignored when they were
issued and then the balance were destroyed for their metal after spending many years in cir-
culation. But there will probably be many US coin varieties which eventually meet the same fate.
Already, many very high mintage US coins have been severely degraded in circulation.

No one's mentioned yet: Moe Howard, of the Three Stooges.

During a local Stooges show, in the trivia portion they pointed out that Moe Howard was listed as an ANA member in a early '50's issue of the Numismatist. That's all I know of how involved or in-depth his collection was - at least he was a serious enough collector at the time to choose to be a member.

I thought I knew everything there was to know about the Three Stooges, but I never knew that!

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

Well, well, well, I posted this thread on 12-28-2005 thinking that a few replies might be posted. I went skiing with my 14 year old yesterday in the Tahoe area and am back in the office today for a few hours work. I logged onto the forums and see 72 replies so far. I think that is a record for one of my posts.

The cool thing about the replies is:

    1. that they have given information about "famous" collectors that I (and probably others) have never known (one of the best aspects of the forums, IMHO, is that knowledge drawn from forumites can be shared and spread to the benefit/enrichment of all); and

    2. In addition to "famous" collectors, we get to learn about "big" guns of various types and contemplate Karl Malone shooting a duck with the gun Laura hooked him up with.

(BTW, my wife is a big Karl Malone fan; a couple of years ago he (at age 40) was on a TV show (The Best Damn Sports Show, I think) and during the show the hosts convinced Karl to take off his shirt. My wife thought it was tacky and in poor taste until his shirt came off and his chiseled physique was revealed. She went nuts and could not believe a 40 year old man could look so buffed. That he is 6'9" and probably has a 32 inch waist, 50 inch chest and 23 inch biceps probably helped her enthusiasm.)

    xxxxx

He didn't. He bought the gun from a gun dealer who also happens to be a customer of Laura's. I believe that she just brought the two parties together.

Was Tom Clancy a collector or an investor? There's a difference (not that you can't be both).

It would take Carl's mailman with a 50mm rifle to give this hobby a blackeye.
