Ebay cops actually busted a scam!! Modern toner$?

In my experience, Ebay is slow to respond to bogus auctions. I thus was surprised to receive the following email:

"
The following is a notice from eBay Trust & Safety regarding:

Item Number - 8364641915

Item Title - 10 coin lot of NGC $20 St. gaudens MS64, 3 Day NR

Our records show that you placed a bid on this item. We removed this item from the Site and cancelled your bid because it appears that the seller's account has been compromised and used by an unauthorized third party. The seller's privileges to trade on eBay may be temporarily suspended while we investigate this matter further. Due to privacy concerns we will not be able to share further details related to this seller.

If the seller asks you to complete this transaction outside of eBay, we strongly recommend that you do not proceed with the transaction and do not respond to the seller."

Maybe Ebay is not totally inept. I recently had my account hijacked, continually receive bogus secnd chance offers, and lately have been receiving Paypall spoof saying my account will be suspended (so what?) if I don't give my password. Golly gee, I may have just fallen off the turnip truck, but I didn't hit my head on the way down!

It appears fraud is rampant in relation to Ebay. Caveat emptor!!

Speaking of caveat emptor, whadda 'ya think about Hi-dollar moderns (especially the toners)?

  • I've also had hijacked accounts bid on my auctions and have been cancelled by eBay. It seems they have been at least trying to get something done.

Thanks for the input. It's interesting to note that the scammers impact sellers as well as buyers.

You folks have some damn nice coins to be sure, but the starting price usually is in the atmosphere and downright insane for your modern booooooooner toners IMO! In my recollection, you only had one coin (a Hawaii commem) with multiple Ebay bids in the past several years.

I'm curious. You & Snakes obvoiusly have many auction listings without any bids. Do you really get many legit bids resulting in actual sales or is Ebay primarily a means of advertising for Anaconda?

I should have figured a response like this from you. I'm not sure where you've been in the last several months, maybe printing out pictures of modern toners and sneaking them into the bathroom from the way you consistently refer to getting boners for toners. image Your childish remarks must simply be an outlet for the repressed feelings you have for toned proof modern coinage. image If you had any clue as to our eBay activity, you will see that we regularly run NO RESERVE auctions, one of which you bid on recently for a toned Proof Barber half.

The higher priced coins are a good way to advertise when listed as featured auctions as they drive eBay surfers into our store where we can list them for 2c to 5c for 30 days.

Yes, I truly have serious doubts about the bona fides of toned moderns. I suspect most are either AT or were poorly stored. And now for a totally unscripted, unrehearsed and unrequested acknowledgement...

    Brandon,

I, for one, would be one of those individuals who enjoys looking at your coins for the sheer madness of hoping to hit the lottery one day to make you a very significant offer on many of your coins. If you asked me which coins I'd buy from you, it would be a very large list and it's my fantasy, so don't ask. The point of this ramble is to say this... you definitely have some beautiful coins and that alone gives you the right to list them as you see fit.

BTW, if I sent you $100 a day... it would take me 31 years to pay you off for the coins I like... and only a few of them are modern.

And here's why words need definitions, and hobbyists need to agree on the meaning of words like "modern".

Twice it's used and at least once in reference to a $20 gold piece that does not exist as a modern.

When other people point things out to you, you have a tendency to take it personally, get defensive and start unloading on them.

To the extent you're getting any "disparaging remarks" I tend to think that's why. When people mention that they don't share your point of view, you have a tendency to belittle them and insult them. That's my view of the situation from the cheap seats, anyway.

[Edit to add: Plus, it's just a message board. There's nothing said on here worth ulcers and sleepless nights.]

This has nothing to do with a disagreement on a point of view. Quite to the contrary, it is an unwarranted, vicious defamatory personal attack! Read the thread for yourself and draw your own conclusion. The purported apology does not impact the irreparable damage done by the initial publication.

Let me ask you a simple question:

Would you like to be called a pervert wanker in a public forum (or in private for that matter)??? Believe me, it is very disconcerning.

You may take this lightly young man, I do not.

It is a free country, but free speech doesn't entitile someone to falsely yell "fire" in a crowded theater or to publicly defame another person. Your comments about me are false, malicious, harmful, unconscionable and totally unwarranted . I suggest that you check with the boss before you put your foot-in-mouth again inasmuch as you are speaking individually and on behalf of Anaconda.

I also hereby request that PCGS/Collectors Universe take appropriate action in respect of your future participation in this forum.

I'm not saying that the specific things said to you were above board or justified. I'm just saying there is a reason why it's *you* who is on the receiving end of these attacks.

  • Well I tried to apologize to you earlier and you blew it off. It's not like nearly every post you make gives someone mental anguish. I do not condone yelling "fire" in a theatre, but I never explicitly stated what you were doing in the bathroom. That's your business. What you inferred from my post is what you have a problem with. I don't normally make comments like that but like many here, I'm just plain tired of your rude comments. Anyone can go back and look at what you've posted in the past and see what I'm talking about. If I recall correctly, you are the one repeately tells people to "chill out, it's just an internet forum" after you take a dig at them.
