Q.....

What would you pay for a grading book with all big color pictures(not teeny b&w ones), with all MS grades?
Philately will get you nowhere....

If it were good, I would pay $150.00.

  • That would be a costly undertaking- considering that each denomination and series is graded differently - the book would most likely be in such a large format that the cost could preclude you from making a decent profit.

It would be interesting to see one.

Actually would like to see a colorized book on all grades that the graders reference for slabbing . this would be beneficial to a few when decidng if their submission is really worth sending.

The best grading book would be in black & white with tri-tone printing. The use of color photos is actually a negative when it comes to grading photos.

I'd rather see it done online so it can be constantly improved, multiple pictures could be provided for some grades, specialist series could receive additional attention, etc. Ultimately, interactive features could allow for tutorials and tests. If free, the ad revenue could easily exceed anything that could be earned by selling books.

  • I actually refer to this book when I get stuck grading:

That PCGS book looks nice! I only have the newer edition which I think stinks. Most grades are in the form of text descriptions only. Lousy IMHO for such a visual hobby.

Amos has one called called "Making the Grade" that is compiled from Coin Values grading articles. It's pretty new. I don't have a copy yet but I like the articles in the magazines with big color pics. It's $20-$25.

  • Instead of a big picture book, does anyone know of a really good CD based grading program? For someone with the know how it seems it would be pretty economical to put together one heck of a program. Most books stop short in showing one example of a coin/grade. A software based product would make it so easy to show multiple examples of a coin series with multiple pictures of each grade. To top it off, it would be great to have drill downs to a coin to show why a coin may be a MS64 vs. a MS65; show why the coin was graded as such as opposed to "here's an AU58".

I would first have to be convinced that it is actually possible to learn how to grade MS coins from a book or website due to the two-dimensional images.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

So long as it was authoritative and well written, the price would not be an issue for me. If you threw in a free set of Ginsu knives with each order, all the better.

I think that for a book like this, I would prefer it be of circulated and uncirculated grades, it basically has to be series specific, or there is just to much information.....

Don't know what I would pay, I would have to see what information was in it and weight it.....

The PCGS grading set is supposed to become available on line one day. Link

Edited to add: What do you think would be a fair subscription price for access?

This is a fabulous book. Some of the Mint State grades are tough to discern - just like real life.

I like the CD idea. There are some pretty good photographers on this forum and a bunch of real knolegable experts. I Bet that between them and all of the nice coin examples owned by forum members that a great CD could be made. Just split the profits between the volunteers. It may be peanuts but who cares at this point.
