New indian cent. what's the grade? new pics posted.

Got a nice 1887 cent in the mail today. I like it quite a lot. what do you think it grades? (but as MrEureka pointed out we really don't need to do this, so think of it as a fun exercise

Still learning and it is a photo so I would guess borderline 66/67 Also borderlin R/RB.

I'll say 65RB. It has the surfaces of a 66, I think, but I don't think the strike is good enough for a 66; the high points appear to be a bit flat and lack full detail.

Depending up luster, either a MS-64BN or a MS-65BN. I don't think it has enough red on the reverse to go RB. PCGS really likes luster for coins in MS-65 range.

Nice! Large pic's make the little nic's seem bigger. My gut say's 64 but probably in a 65 BN holder.

That coin is probably not showing all it has to offer in the photo, even though the photo is a fantastic one (as usual). I'd have to say the coin grades 66RB even though the photo harkens more of a 65RB coin because of some loss of luster. Nice that the wood graining is light and doesn't detract from the coin, because otherwise I couldn't honestly go over 65RB.

might just be my computer screen but looks like some light rub on the obverse high points, AU58 R&B, to me, but could be different in person.

Actually the luster is quite nice in person, difficult to show on the pics, very satiny.

It grades NGC 66RB. Looks better than any 65 I have.

The RB is certainly borderline as far as I'm concerned, but i prefer brown anyway. I think they let dark red/ maroon by for red.

I'm taking new pics with one light. I'll post those soon. They will show luster and color a bit better.

I, IMHO, have to disagree with the grade. There appears to be some rub and the diamonds are weak at best...just a bad strike? Anyway, a beautiful coin but not a 66, IMO.

New pics. Tough crown tonight. I would say that the strike is far from bad and only a touch less than a full strike.

Sorry, "bad" was a bad choice of words - I meant a little on the weak side, that was all. It still appears that this is a 64 or 65 coin, IMHO.

My first thought before I saw the grade was a solid 66.

A 65 would p me off.

Never quite sure what will work better, one light or two. varies a lot by the coin. This coin is definitely dark enough to warrant a single light on further review. It's a good example of the difference in contrast and color when varying the number of lights. One light will showless coverage of color, but more intensity. one light will show more intense luster than two. As coins get redder, one light gets to contrasty and two look better.

I would buy anyone's 64 that looks like that coin. I'd be willing to take a chance on a number of 65s that look like that coin. The color is too dark to warrant a solid red grade in my opinion, even if all of the color is red shades. Even with the new pics, which do show the luster better, I'm at 66RB.
