Why is there little or no demand for foriegn gold coins?

Early American gold coins are sought after in any and all grades, but the foriegn gold even in high grade is sometimes not even catching an opening bid. In the last year I have picked up high grade, PCGS-NGC (ms63 - 66), Prussian, Mexican and Cuban gold at just above melt value. Being as though I have no intention of selling, the resale factor is not important to me. Anyone know of a legitimate reason for this?

I don't know. Good question. I own Krugs, Canadian Mpls, and Pandas... I actually like the Pandas best and have a decent MS Collection.

Most coin collectors are in US.
Most foreign coins have foreign words.
    They can't READ em.

  • Lakesammman,
That is a very cool coin, did you get what you would consider a good deal on that? Also was there much competition in the bidding?

I would love to collect older foreign coins. Did you ever see some of the Elliaseburg foreign coins that got auctioned off? Some of the coolest designs ever. Ufortunately I am working on a US collection and there is not so much exposure to world coins.

    Scavenger:

Have no idea - just liked the coin and bought it at the ANA in SF. Private sale, no auction.

There are many avid collectors of foreign gold but there are still tons of opportunities to pick up great values. It's not unusual to find R-6 and R-7 foreign gold pieces for a grand or two, sometimes much less. I love it.

I love Darkside gold. Little or no premium over spot and beautiful designs. Then put an Eliasberg pedigree on them and I'm in gold heavenimage

Just for fun, I collect 20 Fr French Angels and Roosters, Swiss Helvetias, and some other odd ball stuff. I only collect these goldies graded MS by PCGS/NGC. After the US is hit by terrorists I can use these pieces to buy food.image
I collect Capped Bust series by variety in PCGS AU/MS grades.
