Re: the first coin in this thread -

The coin apperas to have the wear present for an AU55 coin, but the luster looks completely dead, and in order for a coin to grade 55 in my book it has to have some luster. There has to be some life to the coin for an upper end AU grade. The carbon spotting on the upper obverse would lead me to net the coin lower, because after all it is damaging to the planchet, and if it hasn't already eaten the surface of the coin, it will eventually. I'd probably be a bit on the conservative side to say so, but I would net the coin to EF45.

As for the second one - the one you say is properly graded at AU. That coin looks cleaned and recolored, and even if original I 'd call it an AU50 at best. If it indeed is cleaned, I wouldn't be a buyer for anything more than EF40 money.

The 1909 is a bit bewildering at 60. I see some hits and flaws, but I don't see an MS60 coin. I see a 62-ish brown coin with some nice attributes. In order for a coin to truly garner a 60 grade it either has to be an UNC dog or a problem coin, and I don't see that with this one.

I'd say AU50, though I haven't graded Lincolns in ages. I like the color and woodgrain texture on that one. Nice and stately for what it is.

Not MS as has been said it should grade XF45 to AU50.

    The Obverse field shows rub.

Lincoln's coatline thru his bowtie shows wear.

    Mint luster is present.

AU-50, knocked down from AU-53 due to the spots.

Well, since the pictures are from my auction up on Ebay; and taken from my post on the BST forum; I just wanted to reply. I posted a similar reply on my post over there and wanted to do the same here. The pics are from a scanner which i thought was better for getting the penny a real nice size for the Ebay auction, however it scanned a bit brighter than if i used a digital camera. Here is a picture taken tonight with the digital camera. Same coin, unaltered image; right from the camera.

    p.s.
If anyone cares or is interested the coin ends tonight on Ebay. image

From that half-picture the lighting makes it look like a cleaned coin...which probably isn't the case because the scans would have looked different. I'm still at a problem net EF45 coin on this, and I have no idea what the owner is calling it.

It's deja vu all over again.

Another "raw MS63" coin that some esteemed board members insisted was really no better than AU. Boba, when I saw your post in the first link above I almost thought the two coins were the same, but the marks on the portrait don't line up. I guess they just travel in packs. image

I won't pretend I can grade your coin from the scans, but if you're certain it will grade MS63 then I strongly recommenbd you spend the $50 and send it to PCGS. If you're right you'll make that up tenfold when you do eventually sell the coin.

au/50 Just my opinion. To say it is ms on ebay is not a strech for ebay. I have seen grading be off by much more than this on ebay atleast he has a good image on his auction so one can form thier own opinion and bid or not bid.Just my 2 centsimage

thanks, thats all i want people to do is form their own opinion.. and if you have any doubt, please check my recent feedback; 99% of which is all from coins. I took a new photo form today; with the digital cam. instead of the scanner; its the same damn coin. Odd, that one disgruntled board member goes on a rant and i get to be the target. Thanks! image Sorry your cat died; i guess thats why he was in a bad mood. I have had nothing but positive transactions and exchanges up until today, and this auction had been up for NINE days already, so today i get assailed? All i know is this; at least two people who were interested in the coin (regardless of my opinion on the grade) wanted no part of it after the exchanges and multiple links, posts from my3cents. So thanks a bunch; real nice way to treat people. have a good night. Im glad the coin found a good home and met the reserve, im happy with the price it got.

If you send it in to PCGS you'll be wasting your money - they won't grade it because of the carbon problems it has. You would be better off sending it to ANACS for a net grade. BTW, if it's any consolation, I think you got a fair deal on the coin for the price you paid...but that doesn't change my very strong opinion that you'll not receive what you want if you send it to PCGS.

I personally think PCGS would grade this coin with the carbon spotting and the dings in the face.
My personal analysis from the pics would put this as a strong XF40 and no higher. That is , if it is not bodybagged for cleaning.

Boba, I am glad you got your reserve. I would suggest asking in the forum before listing if you are unsure of the grade, but to avoid scandal it is best to not put a grade on your listing at all. I am sure you mean well and are also like many, just enjoying the numismatic field.

I also don't think it is fair of forum members to post a thread without first contacting another forum member of their intent. However, from an earlier post, it appears someone tried very nicely to accomodate and educate, to no avail.

I can assure you , if you are called out, it is a chance to become a better numismatist and dealer. Not for any vindictive reasons.

    My3cents:

I'll give you my two cents. Grading is subjective, and everyone of you have different opinions about Boba's coin. But my3cents, you exposed yourself, so here's my opinion:

I looked at your website and you have very few coins offered, but the 1896 MS65 IHC caught my eye immediately. You're lucky to get that into a 65. You didnt say RD/RB or BN. I'll give you the benefit, and grade it a RB. A 65RB 1896 hasn't sold at an auction for over $225, most for around $180, yet you want a ridiculous price of $294!!!

Are you just jealous tht Boba is doing a better job of overgrading/overpricing than YOU???

Looks like AU50 to me (hope it's not in a PCGS 64RD holder :-).

My advice to all of our board memebers...unless you really, really, really, really, really, really, really , really know what you're doing...or unless you are buying from a totally unknowledgeable seller...

DON'T BUY RAW COINS...especially from a dealer. You cannot beat the pros at their game. it ain't goona happen.

Does VAM cherrypicking count as beating Pro Dealers?

If so then I'm already too far ahead for any of them to ever catch up. image
