What are good books to read about early Commems?

claychaserclaychaser Posts: 4,406 ✭✭✭✭
What are some good books and detailed references to read about early silver and gold commemoratives? I'm not looking for pricing information, but details about the coins themselves, inital sales and distribution, strikes, patinas, populations, etc.

I have several, but the best by far is "Commemorative Coins of the United States" by Anthony J. Swiatek.

I recently purchased "A Basic Guide to U.S. Commemorative Coins" by Michael J. Hodder and Q. David Bowers. It provides just a quick little synopsis on each type. Picked it up at South Park Coins for less than $5.image

Try reading An Inside View of the Coin Hobby in the 1930's: The Walter P. Nichols File by Q. David Bowers. It has some great material about the York County, Maine commemorative and the politics behind it.

And some interesting insights into the monky business that went on with the distribution of several other commemoratives as well. I found it a fascinating read, and CHEAP.

I'd go with these three first:

"The Encyclopedia of United States Silver & Gold Commemorative Coins 1892 to 1954" by Walter Breen and Anthony Swiatek, 362 pages.

"An Illustrated History of US Commemorative Coinage" by Don Taxay, 256 pages.

"Commemorative Coins of the United States - A Complete Encyclopedia" by Q. David Bowers, 768 pages.

Thanks for all the info. I'll start with these books. Many of these coins have what I call "personality", and are 60-100+ years old, and some have some very cool toning by now.
