Ouch! I got clocked.... Seated Halves grades in

I know it's alway a crapshoot with these older coins as to how the TPG's are going to view them as far as originality/cleaning/altering, but PCGS sure seems rough on grading of them right now. No other comments beyond that. I'll take my azz-kicking and not whine about it. If anyone has a submission planned for NGC I'd like to piggyback a couple of seated halves and see if I can't get them reholdered again before selling the coins. If not, they go back to ANACS or they will be for sale if anyone wants a '45-O or '56-O. It's not worth cracking the other 3 out, so they will just stay as is.

    Looks like ANACS got clocked. You were only the delivery boy. When you get them back be sure to take a hard look at them and try to see why PCGS awareded the dreaded BB's.

    Ouch.

    On another note, I love this coin:

    I would have paid PCGS money for it in ANACS plastic in a heartbeat.

    I don't have a problem with the BB's. I knew those would be a quest.
  • Boy-o-boy, that's gotta hurt on the '77 image That coin looks pretty well struck-up, and if it got by the ever-dangerous "cleaned/altered surfaces" category, you would think it would be at least a 60. I notice a surface scratch on the obverse field, and luster isn't the greatest, but c'mon, it looks better than AU!!
    I guess, as many folks have mentioned over the years, todays AU58 could be next month's MS62...in those ranges there is a good bit of wiggle room, evidently!image
    Don't you know that it's worth

    And as rich as you are,
    it's much better by far,
    to be young at heart!

    Ouch -- looks like a reminder that you need to be VERY sure of a coin's originality and authenticity before submitting it as a crackout...
  • when in doubt.... send them in still holdered. you would have taken MUCH less of a beating.

    That would have been no fun. I just thought I would post the coins and the grades and let everyone see them. Here's my views of what I thought of the coins....

    1844 --> Probably cleaned with soap & water at some time. Easily could have been BB'd. Grade could have been anything from 50-55. I see it more as a 53+.
    1845-O --> Questionable chocolate coloring. Otherwise 58. A gamble.
    1856-O --> Easily a 58 if it got holdered. Probably retoning after some cleaning some time ago. Pretty half if the graders would have amused me. image
    1860-O --> Nothing special. Didn't pay much. 55 or 58 reasonable.
    1877-S --> Reverse is 63 easy. Obverse could have been seen many different ways as to whether the head & leg abrasions were wear or rubs. Was hoping PCGS would take the reverse into account and give the coin a break. They didn't.

    The three go into my registry set as is.
  • That is why I don't like cracking them out. Some people don't even get the coins back into the same holder. Sometimes I'll try a cross, if it doesn't work I don't have to send the coin back anywhere.

    Done both. Greatest loss-10/10 BB. Have 11 cracked in house now. I do it instead of going to Atlantic City.

  • the 1877-s is wb-103 and looks to be an R-6 coin.pretty rare in that grade.
    you need to send that baby back to anac.s and beg for the same grade, image
    may the force be with you.
