Heritage's "JH Exceptional" label - is it something you trust?
The title says it all. How much credential do you put on the label "JH Exceptional" given to some of the heritage coins?

Times have changed. I went from monitoring their site every day to not looking at it at all, about 3 years ago. JH exceptional now means nothing to me when it comes to Heritage IH's. "JH" now means the best of the worst generic IH material they have in their online inventory.
<< <i>I give it the same credence as any other dealer calling a coin PQ. No question Halperin is a world class eye, but Heritage is in the business of selling coins.

This is true. However, I will say that with some scrutiny, I've had my best luck with Heritage buying JH Exceptional coins. A couple have upgraded, and often I've had great luck with resale on eye-appealing pieces that appeared high-end for the grade. A few that are in my collection are likely to remain with me for quite a long time, as I've not encountered finer pieces. The key to buying them is to look carefully and consider its personalappeal to you - a general tenet of buying coins in the first place.

Still, I'm not about to question Jim Halperin's eye for coins...
If time proves that these are truly PQ coins at
the top of their grade, then their designation will have
earned respect.
