Heritage's "JH Exceptional" label - is it something you trust?

The title says it all. How much credential do you put on the label "JH Exceptional" given to some of the heritage coins?

I always wondered that too. Somehow I can't imagine JH slogging through the millions of coins that pass through Heritage in a year, and picking out the "exceptional" ones. Does anyone have any insight?

I give it the same credence as any other dealer calling a coin PQ. No question Halperin is a world class eye, but Heritage is in the business of selling coins.

I think they use it for ugly coins that they can't get rid of. Usually followed by a "make an offer"

I agree with dnadave- I ususally see it on coins that didn't meet reserve, and are overpriced by 10-15%

It used to be helpful for me, but over thime they added so many coins - literally hundreds available JH Exceptional at any given time - that it lost the meaning to me. Yes, some in that group are amazing, but others just aren't PQ. I think they need to focus and limit it to 25 coins at any given time.

About 5 years ago I looked at an 1899-O Morgan in pcgs ms66 that was 'JH exceptional'.............well, it was a nice 65 that became a lousy 66. image

I agree with most of the posters above. It used to have some meaning, but lately I've seen some really unattactive coins labeled as JH Exceptional. Now, it's entirely possible that it "looks much better in hand". But then take a better picture then!
  • A good many of these "Exceptional" coins are real dogs. I like heritage, but the exceptional thing is kinda bogus IMHO.

I have a couple and I think they are pretty darn exceptional.

I trust it less than I trust an MS65 label on a PCGS or NGC slab. It comes down to the coin and nobody's opinion except yours and your future customer's. Some of thiose exceptional coins leave me puzzled as to the exceptional qualities though occasionally there is a PQ one for sure. I doubt it is anything more than a marketing device to draw attention to particular coins. Perhaps some are slow-moving dogs that need a bite. Others might be nice and deserve a picky collector's eye on them, but I find them usually marked up in those cases. But such is retail.

Years ago I valued the "JH" label for 65RD IH's and bought them faster than they could list them on their site. They were almost all great coins and I refreshed Heritage's site 20 times a day looking to nab their most recent JH coin listing. I bought some wonderful 65RDs in 2001/2002 from their site.

Times have changed. I went from monitoring their site every day to not looking at it at all, about 3 years ago. JH exceptional now means nothing to me when it comes to Heritage IH's. "JH" now means the best of the worst generic IH material they have in their online inventory.

This is true. However, I will say that with some scrutiny, I've had my best luck with Heritage buying JH Exceptional coins. A couple have upgraded, and often I've had great luck with resale on eye-appealing pieces that appeared high-end for the grade. A few that are in my collection are likely to remain with me for quite a long time, as I've not encountered finer pieces. The key to buying them is to look carefully and consider its personalappeal to you - a general tenet of buying coins in the first place.

I have had a couple of nice ones and a couple not so nice; at least to me. Even returned one.

All things considered I think they're more likely to be PQ for the grade...BUT I wouldn't consider it a sure-thing in terms of being PQ. I've bought one "JH Exceptional" coin and I'm very happy with it (and the price was reasonable)...but I've seen others that look not so "exceptional" to me.

Still, I'm not about to question Jim Halperin's eye for coins...

I've bought a fair number of JH seated dimes over past 10 years. They were typically PQ for the grade and I was happy. Recently, the JH label has lost some of its shine....

Let me say how to put this tactfully,........HYP!

If time proves that these are truly PQ coins at

the top of their grade, then their designation will have

    earned respect.
