Help guess grade 1895-S $20

This is a friends coin. He gave me the pics last night. They don't really do it justice. Obverse has a few cheek scratches but the reverse is nearly perfect.

NGC called this a sixty-TWO. Still can't see why.

The lettering looks soft and blurry. May be fake.

TWENTY looks a little fat. Not a good sign.

    Doesn't look right.

coinspeculator, <<pcgs 64 is my guess.>>. You do realize it's a raw coin, right?

Geez, you GUYS! Planchet gets a little wavy, portrait fades into field, and letters a bit blurry and first thing ya know someone's yellin "FAKE!"

  • Andy got it right imo with absoutely fake. Seen 20s with that look before and its all wrong for how they should look.

That fake one has the design that always reminds me of the facade in Yankee Stadium. I have seen that design before.

Also look at the E PLURIBUS UNUM ribbon. It is plastered over the eagle's wings in a wierd unprofessional way.

  • Interesting that you guys called a fake. The lettering looks fat because the pic is blurry which you can see below. I saw the coin in person and didn't think that at all, but i'm no expert. The obverse in the top pic is bad because it is discolored and makes the face look rounded which it isn't at all. I was looking for clues with this Heritage example of a ms66 and couldn't find anything obvious.

Also, this coin has been passed down recently in my friends family. It's been in the family for years, and they are from SF so the S mintmark wouldn't be a huge surprise.

Any more thoughts appreciated...if it's an obvious fake then it will save him some submission money.

  • I think it's real, but won't guess a grade based on those pics. Send it to ANACS if you want to save a few bucks on the submission.

"Obvious fake" is a misnomer. If it was that obvious then there wouldn't be the kind of discussion that there is here.

Many of the counterfeits, as you know, are very deceptive. As you also know, the value of the coin jumps substantially in the

higher grades. Given the photos posted it would be very difficult to conclusively determine either the grade or the status of

the coin as a mint product. Submission may be the only option.

dust247: Agreed take it to ANACS under the slower grading submission. They are inexpensive enough.

We are looking at very bad pics for sure.

I'd also bet that the coin is no better than 18K gold, probably more like 14K. Weigh it and save a grading fee.
