South African Gold question.....

Attending the Reserve Bank of Australia Gold coin auction yesterday and today.

Apart from a wild feeding frenzy on the Australian Half Sovereigns, the early South African gold went crazy...

Eg. 1892, Paul Kruger Half Pond Double Shaft (Krause Mishler 9.1) Scarce aUnc Est: AUD$400

image

Hammer Price:$4,400 plus Buyers Comission.

Most went way over estimates with some going over 10 x est!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What did I miss?

Isn't the double shaft the scarcer version? Plus this is the first year, and it's in premium grade---a very rare coin. I'm not surprised at the hammer price.

Could you give us other examples of early Z.A. gold pieces? Thanks.

The double shaft was actually an error in the die creation - the person who carved the die did not know that the standard wagon in ZA only had 1 shaft. When Kruger saw the coins he was very upset and halted production after only a few thousand had been minted. This is true for both the gold coins and for the 5 shilling coin.

As to price, I am a little shocked, but only a little. I don't know who did the estimates on the coin but they really did not have much of a clue as to the value of this piece. I have seen examples of the single shaft wagon in much worse condition selling on the bay for close to the estimated price of this piece. This is a premium speciman with minimal wear (hard to find) and a very limited mintage and survival rate.

Just as a side note, the double shaft wagon will only be found on the first year issues - since Kruger was so upset about the double wagon problem, I believe that the minting of the ZA coins was moved from one mint to another (don't have my reference handy so I am not sure about the minting, but I am sure that the only year that had the double shaft was the 1892 issues and only on the gold and 5 shilling peices).
