South African Gold question.....
Attending the Reserve Bank of Australia Gold coin auction yesterday and today.
Apart from a wild feeding frenzy on the Australian Half Sovereigns, the early South African gold went crazy...
Eg. 1892, Paul Kruger Half Pond Double Shaft (Krause Mishler 9.1) Scarce aUnc Est: AUD$400

Hammer Price:$4,400 plus Buyers Comission.
Most went way over estimates with some going over 10 x est!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What did I miss?

Could you give us other examples of early Z.A. gold pieces? Thanks.
"Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you." -Luke 11:9
"Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD: And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might." -Deut. 6:4-5
"For the LORD is our judge, the LORD is our lawgiver, the LORD is our king; He will save us." -Isaiah 33:22
As to price, I am a little shocked, but only a little. I don't know who did the estimates on the coin but they really did not have much of a clue as to the value of this piece. I have seen examples of the single shaft wagon in much worse condition selling on the bay for close to the estimated price of this piece. This is a premium speciman with minimal wear (hard to find) and a very limited mintage and survival rate.
Just as a side note, the double shaft wagon will only be found on the first year issues - since Kruger was so upset about the double wagon problem, I believe that the minting of the ZA coins was moved from one mint to another (don't have my reference handy so I am not sure about the minting, but I am sure that the only year that had the double shaft was the 1892 issues and only on the gold and 5 shilling peices).
