What does "No motto gold" mean?

of course, I know that some gold coins have motto, and some don't. But when people say "I collect no motto gold", do they really mean any and every US gold coin without a motto? Or do they mean pre-civil war eagles, or something else?

Thanks,

Joss

"No Motto" generally refers to pre-1866 coinage before the Motto ("In God We Trust") was added to the reverse of silver quarters throgh dolars and $5's through $20's. There are exceptions: 1907 and 1908 $10's and $20's, 1866-S silver and gold, and 2 cent pieces that had the Motto earlier.

There is an interesting story about the '07 and '08 issues. Teddy Roosevelt learned that our gold coins were being used in foreign countries.

He was offended that "our God" was on coins being used by those non-christians and he had it removed.

I'm sure someone here can give a much more detailed version of the story. I've heard several twists and turns on it, so I'm hardly well versed on it.

You could Google it, might make for some interesting reading.

I thought Teddy wanted the Motto removed because of some of the immoral things that the coins would be used for in this country.....

But Congress overruled him and ordered the motto back I believe.....
