1798 Bust dollar....guess the grade.*Grade Revealed*

This coin is dove grey, not red in color. The red is due to my imaging skills.image
I had some blind luck tonight and bought this coin locally less than an hour ago. Please give your grade opinion.

Pretty good call Al. I would think Fine but agree there were probably points deducted for the scratch.

I like the color - looks very original. Ms Liberty sure is wide-eyed! Looks a little spooked, which may be appropriate around Halloween time.

Edited to say - got a better look at the reverse letters - VG tops.

I think you guys know your Bust Dollars. I do not know them too well, but from what I have read in the Red Book and Second Edition of Coin Grading and Counterfeit Detection, indications are that this would be a VG-8. I personally find the scratch in the reverse quite distracting and am surprised it made it in a PCGS holder at all because of DAMAGE, but I suppose it's rarity gave it preferential consideration.

I would grade your coin a VG8,no way a fine.

It looks like there is a plugged hole in it at,

OBV,lower right of E in LIBERTY,

REV,smack in the middle of the tail feathers,

Can somebode else see what i'm seeing?

What type of slab is it in?

    Still a imagecoin.

I see it, too... Weight adjustment?

PCGS holder? Wow. I wouldn't be surprised if it was graded VG-8, but I would have second thoughts buying it personally at that... The rev. scratch is just too distracting.

VG 8 details. Possible plug by the E. It could just be some marks from circulation.

VG8, but not too attractive in my opinion.

    VG-8.

I wish that the scratch was not there, but given the grade it's a minor point.

The big plus is that the coin has not been cleaned.

    The grade is G06.

ER nailed the grade! Some others did guess with the generic "good" grade were also correct.

I believe who ever submitted the coin got screwed on the grade. It looks around VG10 to me.

No plug under the "E" in Liberty just a couple of scratches.

I was thrilled to buy this coin for $780. I believe that was VG money. image

I guess most of us just suck at grading....image

Actually, PCGS loves to undergrade a lot.

For comparison, here's a PCGS VG-10. (Every time I photograph this coin, I'm shocked by the scratches. They are nearly invisible on the coin in hand. Weird).

Dang, I like this coin design, in whatever grade!

    I totally agree!!image

When collecting lower grade draped bust coinage, you can't let a few scratches bother you.

That's a beautiful VG10, Tommy Type and it looks higher grade than mine.
