Update: buyer's new ID re: Advice please? Got my first neg, and I'm confused

Update 10/31/05: He mailed the coin back, he says, on Friday, and has sent two emails today asking if it has arrived. Ebay member name now is mintstatemadness, if you're interested. He's getting a refund as soon as it arrives.

Oh, yeah, just remembered, his ID before coinsforsaleemailme was tamara123_coins, from 8/1-9/1/05, so that's three in less than three months.

This is the item in question. He received 10/22, and sent an email saying he could not read my return address, and wanted to return it. I immediately send my name and address. The hard copy of the invoice was sent with the item, so my address was not illegible there. My return policy is unconditional, I don't care why he wanted to return, he did not say, I did not ask, doesn't matter. Next day 10/23 I get another email wanting same info. Sent it again, asked him why he didn't use what I had sent the previous day. 10/24 I get a third email, says it's my last chance to reply before a neg is given. Reply again with info. This morning I've got a neg.

Turns out aol cannot deliver to him, code 550 5.1.1, unknown or illegal alias, whatever that means. So, I go to my messages on ebay, and try to communicate with him. He gets it this time for some reason, writes back how amazing a neg is in getting me to respond. Says he will contact ebay to remove neg if he gets refund and positive feedback.

So, experienced sellers, please tell me what I did wrong, and any advice from this point on would also be appreciated. I feel like I did everything in my power to comply, but if he cannot receive my replies, sort of a catch 22. Any idea why he can send on an email address but have aol unable to deliver for the above reason? I'm confused.

On any Ebay item , I always use the contact buyer thru ebay.
Emails may never be recieved because of spam blockers.

Aol has some type of problem with mail from ebay. I dont know the details but I guess your emails never got thru. Too bad the person gave
you a negative. Seems like he was pretty quick to hand it out. Sometimes you just have to let things go you normally wouldnt put up with in
the real sceme of things. As a seller, you also have to protect yourself.

PS: Just checked the listing. This idiot returned a Morgan to me for no legitimate reason. On relist the next buyer loved it.

That is no fun! I had an impatient bidder once. He filed a PayPal dispute before even waiting a full week for the item to show up. It turns out it was waiting for him at his post office.

I'm not sure if I would have done anything differently in your case. Normally my mail gets through or I get a "mail undelivered" mail back from the system. Now I would get him the refund very quickly once the coin gets returned. Then I would try to get the feedback removed.

Be grateful you're getting that Morgan back and I'll tell you why: Check out the font used on the insert. That bold, three line print was only used for part of a morning during one day at a large show about a year or so ago! Normal print/font is light-dark-light. Yours is dark-dark-dark. It was in error and when caught, quickly fixed. There was a discussion regarding it on NGC's website shortly afterward when a grader confirmed how rare it is.
Only a very few coins "escaped" that morning into submitters hands- yours apparently being one of them.

Edited to add:That insert/slab is rarer than even the black core first generation NGC holders and should command a premium among slab collectors.

He just replied to a question I sent through ebay, but which I received in aol, and again cannot reply to. Frustrating. He says I lied about responding to his emails, and now is going to keep the coin, and that I can just keep the neg. Amazingly, and as buyers on here know I always leave postive glowing feedback immediately upon payment, I did not leave him feedback yet. Hmm, what to do.

I certainly can live with a neg, been in business with the public for 26 years now (drugstore), and lesson learned the hard way, just grates that I don't deserve it. There really isn't anything else I can do, is there?

So, to turn this lemon into lemonade, any suggestions as to my feedback? I'm going to take my time leaving it, it will be a dish served cold all right, and would love to know what you all think I should say.

I also normally leave feedback right away but had a bad gut feeling about this particular twit so also did not leave it for him. Fortunately for me, my eMails got to him.

Because AOL sucks. There's really no deeper explanation.

Move on. Don't let it get you down. Everybody on eBay encounters one of these tools eventually.

My, he's got quite the potty mouth as the day goes forward. Russ, I had the same phrase, approval service, go through my mind right away with him for some reason. His previous ID was tamara123_coins, and he won't tell me why that only lasted a month before he began using coinsforsaleemailme.

Just realized I haven't blocked him yet.

whatever email address you were using return an error called "user unknown".

in other words, the email you sent was to a user that did not exist.

did you compare the two email addresses to see if they are the same?

ebay should be whitelisted with AOL.

maybe your provider sucks hardcore and allows spam/junk email...

which then causes AOL to blacklist you..

but i think that is not the case, due to the error returned by aol's mail server.

i would prob not neg him. i would just let it go.

You can send out an email with any address you want provided you have an SMTP server running. I have code sitting on my server right now that I could use to send an email and have any email I wanted appear in the FROM field. Better watch out for people who could abuse this.

I have 100% feedback on eBay and a lot of transactions. Never have been concerned about a neg and I've always wondered why someone who was a legit seller would even be worried about a neg or two from DUMB buyers. If a buyer knows eBay and what he is purchasing, I think they can read through the BS negs.

Link to Ebay Taiwan feedback. Just make sure you know which button is which (compare it to the English page) before you submit it.

I haven't needed to use it yet, but I have it bookmarked for the inevitable...

    It's not Korea, it's Taiwan:

    http://cgi2.tw.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?LeaveFeedbackShow&useridfrom=[yourID]&useridto=[theirID]&item=[itemno]

Replace the appropriate fields (without the brackets) and voila -- you get 125 characters to express yourself.

Make sure to choose the right button for negative! It's in Chinese, but it's in the same order as the English one. It defaults to positive, and too many times people have left "positive negatives" -- nasty words, but the green button nonetheless.

EDIT: Dang, third. I type too slow...

I enjoy reading about Alpha Hotels that need to be blocked. Took care of it with my eBay account and encourage others to do the same. When I buy, I don't care about an eBay seller with a bad mark or two over the course of hundreds of transactions. I worry about newbies and am truly afraid of 0-1 feedback members bidding on my auctions.

Thanks for all the info, folks. Pat, he says he's keeping it now, but thanks for the info. I have forwarded all the aol fatal error messages with his address in them to him, and none have been returned, so they might be getting through. Coincidentally, he has stopped communicating. So, I presume he now knows I was telling the truth, and his silence confirms his lack of character.

Gosh I wish he had returned it for the refund. Like Braddick said that IS a rare slab. I spent well over a year trying to find one before I finally located on in Cincinnati last month. Then I had to spend $450 on a coin I didn't need or want just to get an example of that slab variety.

back to your original question. One thing you could have done which i have done
twice is to obtain the buyers contact info. Yes, i have called two slow/no responders
at home. Both times it was similar computer glitches.
I wouldn't give up on your 100 percent yet. See if he will agree to a mutual withdrawal.
He might be reasoned with before it gets too ugly.
BTW, your feedback still shows your an excellent seller, everybody knows there are some
out there harder to please than martha stewart on dirty sheets. (to steal a line from dennis miller)

    on a different note...

if one plans to sell on the internet, they should try to become more savy.

when you recieved the error message saying the email could not be delivered,
it should have set off alarms bells. Trying it 2 more times.. heh, would not help.

Part of the blame might be shared among both of you.. sorta a naive duo.

This is one of the reasons I don't state a return option in my auctions. If someone has a problem then we can work something out but I refuse to run my auctions as an approval service.

I would NOT leave him positive feedback whatsoever before your negative feedback is removed. I would explain to him one more time (and be sure he gets the email) exactly what happened and that you will refund his purchase under the condition that he agrees to remove the negative feedback from your record. I would not leave him positive feedback until after the negative feedback is completely removed. If he refuses, you've done all you can do to remedy the situation and I would not hesitate to leave him negative feedback in return.

It is rare, but I would agrue that it is not as rare as a black NGC slab. This slab type, hologram and label are all still in use. All it would take is someone at NGC to bold the other lines and send a days worth out like that and no one would know.

Now for the NGC black slabs they don't have those slabs, labels etc and it would be much harder to get out of the building. I'm not saying any black cores still exist (I could only imagine and dream of walking into a dusty NGC storeroom and finding a box full of black slabs or protype labels etc but.). You know what I mean?

Yes, and my overriding feeling about all this is, I didn't have the time today to waste on this. He initiated it a little bit ago, with a note that I must refund his money and leave a positive. I read everything about mutual withdrawal before I agreed, and I doubt that he did, because it states that once it's agreed to by both parties, no more feedback can be left. Specifically, if one has not left feedback yet, they cannot do so. There is wisdom in this, to prevent a retaliatory neg, I assume, once matters have been settled.

Thanks to you all for your support, advice, and suggestions as to how I could have done better, I have taken note.
