I have your 2003 book on third party grading services. Are there any new ones now?

125 companies 3/3/05
<< <i>I only see 3.
Maybe 4
<< <i>Yes there are quite a few. The second edition is tentatively scheduled for early 2007 and so far contains over 40 more companies, and more than 100 new production varieties. Somehow I'm going to have to try and squeeze all of that in without increasing the physical size of the book.

125 companies 3/3/05 >>
Wow! How much is the second book going to cost?
Another Coin World holder, maybe you should just lump all these together.
Conder101....how many are still actively slabbing?
Do you have a criteria for deciding on legitimacy, for lack of a better word before you'll include a slab in the mix? How do you (or do you) weed out the people who use the coinworld slabs or slabs like those?

<< <i>Another Coin World holder, maybe you should just lump all these together >>
The problem is some of them are "legitimate" (Though pssible fly-by-night) services, some are just dealers inventory, and some are service wannabes that just don't make the cut. The problem is trying to determine which group a given one belongs in. Services get listed, inventory doesn't, wannabes go under miscellaneous. (I try to list as many as possible because some day x number of years from now someone will come up with one of these things and want to know about it and where it came from.) I can list the wannabes all together but I don't want to do that with "legitimite" services if I can avoid it.

Good question. Here is the list again and I've put a * next to the ones that I am fairly sure are still operating.

That's 35 still in operation plus 10 more that are questionable. Or a total of possibly 45 companies still operating
<< <i>Do you have a criteria for deciding on legitimacy, >>
The coin must be in either a sealed holder or in the case of certificates with a photo so that it can be determined that the coin and the certificate definitely go together. Preferably with a serial number and barcode. And they must accept outside submissions, grading and slabbing them in exchange for a fee.
There are a few on the list, such as GSA or Paramount where that last requirement is not met. But in general it they only slab their own coins they do not get listed as a service but instead get listed under Miscellaneous. (As much as we dislike them, firms like ACC and SGS do accept outside submissions and are therefor listed as legitimate services.
It's remarkable that there are so many slabbers and so few that have wide market acceptance.
