ms63 or au58

For the registry, would you you choose an ms63 average coin or an au58 with tons of eye appeal.
I would have to go with the coin that made me say wow everytime i looked at it no matter what the registry numbers say.

For the registry set you have to go with the 63. That is the problem with the registry game. You collect plastic and not coins. As a collector of coins I would go with the 58 with tons of eye appeal.

I have upgraded my commem set on two occasions with a lower grade coin. They were no brainer decisions because the lower grade coins were so much nicer.

For the Registry, I go with the higher coin. The Registry is all about points and puffing one's chest. If one really only cares about eye appeal, there is no reason whatsoever to be in a Registry.

It's also a place where you can have a pic of each coin with notes on each one to show off your collection. I have seen a few sets based on eye appeal rather than numbers while browsing thru the registry.

Then it is likely a collection of coins and not a registry set. I too use the registry as a way to share my coins, but I do not compete. I state in the description the collection objective, which is not scoring registry points. A true registry set is blind to appeal. It is all about the numbers. Many hard core players are the buyers of all the over graded crap in the market. They don't care about whether the grade on the slab is accurate, in fact they thrive on the overgraded crap cause they can buy the slab at a cheaper price. Why do you think most sets don't include images?

To he!! with the registry, perfect example of why I stay away from it, give me the nice 58 over a blah 63 anyday.

Keep the nice 58 until you find a nice 63 - or get it regraded to a nice 63.

    I'll wait for a 66, thanks.

Are you going to win some money for having the 63 in the Registry?

Always take the eye-appeal.image You should buy the coin that you enjoy viewing more, not the number printed on the label. JMHOimage

I think the Registry helps focus your collecting by defining a set. It feels good to add a coin and finally to add the last coin. So many people are competitive they just can't even think of filling in a Registry set w/o the goal of scoring high. But it doesn't have to be competitive, you can go for all coins the same grade, the same look or some other theme.

I was very impressed and truly enjoyed the first "worst known" registry set started by our own Braddick. He wanted to have the lowest graded coins for each type. However in that case he would have to skip the AU coin as he would have to downgrade it later, hoping for a AG 3 or something. image

I hate AU coins....they must be mint state for me. Take these for example.

Wait, I think I got screwed!!! Is that rub????

For the registry sets a person can still participate, provide photos for others to enjoy, and yet not get too wrapped up in having the highest grades. If an AU58 is nicer (and less expensive) than a 63, buy the AU58, put it in the registry set and you can still make a beautiful set. If someone is hell bent on having the highest grades...well good for them.

Who cares if someone has a higher MS set? They probably live in Iowa or some boring place and not in Hawaii!

Certianly, you should go with the higher grade if the Registry really matters to you. However, if you really care more about the quality of your coins, I think you should go with the eye appealing piece.

Dizzy should know with all of those AU58 commems. image

If I can afford both, I would go with the 63. However, there are many examples where the difference in price from a 58 to a 63 is enough to just get the 58. Having said that, what made the coin a 63? If the 63 was a 63 due to one wicked hit in a prime focal area (but the rest of the coin was relatively free from hits) then I would probably pass on it. There can be many different things to make a 63 a 63.
