Registry on a budget...

Say you wanted to build your own registry set but had a cap of $20,000. What coin and series would be the best for this undertaking...

It depends - do you want to be #1 or #50 ?

See my kennedy set in my link below now thats a budget set image. For 20,000 I'm sure there are allot of sets to collect and it depends if you are going after the highest graded or just a nice average set. I my self would go for a nice set of Walkers in 65 for 20,000.

Relayer asks a most pertenant question ... does it matter what level you "compete" at?

Also, is "100% complete" important, as there are stoppers in many series?

If your goal is to be #1 ... IMO $20.k won't last long in almost any registry (except maybe some of the recent mini sets)

Of course if you're happy just displaying the fruits of your labor to the broad audience that a Registry can provide, and go for attractive coins that are not PopTop's, 20.k goes a LONG way.

I have four sets registered (Shield Nickels, Liberty Nickels, Mercury Dimes and Standing Liberty Quarters), and except for the Mercury Dime Set, I'm on the front page in all of them (last time I checked). I don't have $20.k total in all four of those registries combined.

It wouldn't even get #1 in the eight coin Proof Kennedy Short Set; and that's if the necessary coins ever came up for sale. But, the nice thing about the mini sets is that they can be completed at any price tier.

Your idea of a "budget" and mine are just a wee bit different image

Click here. That is my set and I have spent less than $100. Learning how to grade the series you are going to be (and submitting them yourself) will save hundreds and possibly thousands!

This seems to me to be an odd question because it appears you are more interested in a $20k registry set than in the coins that would populate the set. If that is the case I would suggest you save your money until you find something you actually like, be it coins or something else.

    ugh.

what a way to go about a hobby.
forget about the money unless this is an "investment". (keeps straight face).

buy what catches your fancy and you enjoy owning.

    best wishes

Oh I have something I like...but for now to even consider making a registry set would be futile at this point.... image

You could be #1 for 20K or less for many of the single year mint sets

My "budget" is also different. I am working on a non-investment, just for kicks Cheapass Y2K registry mint set. I'm bottom feeding on others anguish over the grade on the plastic and picking up some MS64-67 coins for less than $10 each slabbed (lowest so far $1). I guess I'm playing the game in reverse (sort of) yet "not playing". Like I said it's for fun and nothing more. Admitted plastic buying. The Goodacre presentation dollar will have to wait though, if ever.

Have fun with your 20K! If you like moderns, you could pick a year and try to snatch up all 70's. Investment potential is anyones guess though. Good luck!

This question really bugged me while I was making the kids lunch, and I wish I'd have answered different but I can see Tom and Mark echo'd my deeper thoughts.

    Buy what you like!!

I do not compete on the registry, nor do I buy coins for my registry (most of my coins have been here since before there were registries) ... I buy coins for my collections that I like, and occassionally I put some of them on the registry to show of the "fruits of my labor".

The sharing and comparing of collections through the registries is a great thing, and even the competition among participants can be good I suppose, but it should not dictate your collection (IMO) ... have your own purpose and desires and follow them, and you will appreciate your collection more than any registry awards.

$20,000 sure doesn't sound like a small budget to me. Here's a 100% complete set I put together for under $1,000. Meets your criteria of Top 10 also, it's 4th in the all time finest list image

ps. I just checked my records and the set ended up costing me $737.94.

I had hoped to spend $20,000 for my XF45 Barber Half set. I'm thinking by the time i am done that it will be closer to 25-30K. So, you could put together a nice matched VF set and spend a lot of time putting it together.

If you're #1 in July then you get a piece of paper from PCGS congratulating you for your excellence in set-building.

Send me a list of your coins I'll send you a #1 certificate for only $500 - it will save you a fortune!

How about a single issue Classic Commem set. Arkansas, Oregon, and Texas sets are pretty neat.
I collect Capped Bust series by variety in PCGS AU/MS grades.
