Weird (but positive) eBay win

jonathanbjonathanb Posts: 4,059 ✭✭✭✭✭
One of the weirdest (but positive) eBay experiences I've had in a while. First, this was posted with the oh-so-useful description, "Please see pictures."

...with a starting price of a buck seventy five. And then nobody bid. At all. That's pretty weird in itself.

So I got $1.10 face value in junk silver for $4.75 including shipping, with an extra random quarter thrown in, and a couple of boring pennies.

And then I looked at the boring pennies. It's not a huge dollar value, but I couldn't believe what that illegible cent at the bottom left turned out to be:

Who'd'a thunk? Gotta wonder what the seller was thinking, not giving any sort of clue...

    Nice pick up Jonathan.

What ever became of that 1860-O dime you scored on the German Ebay?

Now IMO, a 1916-s Graded at least 63 R&B, worth $115, put it ina PCGS slab and its worth $225...Hmmmm, Doesn't that qualify you for a YOU SUCK award? I know it should with us Cent Collectors!

Not really image It'd be a YOU SUCK if it turned out to be an EF/AU 09-S VDB, maybe image

Not to rain on anyone's parade (mine included), but I think it's a 58. There's something going on at the high point of the cheekbone. At best, there's a luster break. You can see it in my picture. That said, I've never been comfortable with the MS/AU call, so we'll see. Even at 58 it's worth more than I paid, so I'm not complaining.

The 1860-o is still drifting through PCGS. I submitted it through a dealer, so I don't know exactly when it arrived or even what service it went in under. I suppose it could show up any day now, but the latest "got grades" post today was from 4/14, so I'm not planning on being worried for another several weeks yet. Still hoping!

FYI, I got a second opinion yesterday from someone whose opinion I trust more than my own, and with the coin in hand he agreed it was 63, but felt that it was too dark to come back as anything but BN. I tend to agree with that part, and was a little surprised to see folks here agree on RB. Shrug. For a $100-ish coin, I'm not springing for slabbing fees in any case.

Very nice pick up! I think it is RB from what the picture shows. I can see a lot of red!

For the record, ANACS agrees with those who said 63 RB.
