Yes, it has been debated on these forums before.
Tom
I say keep it! Since when did anyone care what atheists think, anyway?

Amen, brother!
Washington's Thanksgiving Proclamation:
Whereas it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favor; and Whereas both Houses of Congress have, by their joint committee, requested me "to recommend to the people of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer, to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favors of Almighty God, especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness:"
Now, therefore, I do recommend and assign Thursday, the 26th day of November next, to be devoted by the people of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being who is the beneficent author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be; that we may then all unite in rendering unto Him our sincere and humble thanks for His kind care and protection of the people of this country previous to their becoming a nation; for the signal and manifold mercies and the favorable interpositions of His providence in the course and conclusion of the late war; for the great degree of tranquility, union, and plenty which we have since enjoyed; for the peaceable and rational manner in which we have been enable to establish constitutions of government for our safety and happiness, and particularly the national one now lately instituted' for the civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed, and the means we have of acquiring and diffusing useful knowledge; and, in general, for all the great and various favors which He has been pleased to confer upon us.
And also that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations and beseech Him to pardon our national and other transgressions; to enable us all, whether in public or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties properly and punctually; to render our National Government a blessing to all the people by constantly being a Government of wise, just, and constitutional laws, discreetly and faithfully executed and obeyed; to protect and guide all sovereigns and nations (especially such as have show kindness to us), and to bless them with good governments, peace, and concord; to promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue, and the increase of science among them and us; and, generally to grant unto all mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as He alone knows to be best.
Given under my hand, at the city of New York, the 3d dy of October, A.D. 1789.
I can never understand why that would bother people so much. We should be reminded of God as much as possible during our days.

<< <i>Having IGWT on our money is discriminatory and against the Constitution. It is at once anti-American and anti-Christian. It should be removed. >>
Oh, it isn't either. It isn't any of that.
and as a side note
all others pay cash
<< <i>Let the Supreme Court decide. >>
How can they decide if they are sworn in under the bible???
My stance is to keep it, it gives most people something to believe in and thats a good thing.
I personally dont believe in a higher being, but I like the thought of others being happy. So just keep it... Same with the Pledge of Allegiance, let the kids say it in school.
I am Looking to Buy California Tokens too.
<< <i>Oh, it isn't either. It isn't any of that.
Sure it is. It's just that people choose to ignore their own laws and beliefs in favor of their agenda.
Having IGWT on our coinage is not right, because it violates the beliefs of millions, abeit a minority, of citizens. Atheists are perhaps the last group of people that can be openly ridiculed and discriminated against without question. Don't dismiss us because you don't agree with us.
It is not Constitutional, because it violates the first amendment regarding the establishment of a religion: having IGWT on our nation's coinage represents a de facto establishment of a religion.
And indeed, it is anti-Christian. Jesus was sufficiently wise to recognize that a separation between Church and State is the way to go. In Matthew 22:19-21, the Bible says:
"Show me the coin used for paying the tax.” [The Pharisees] brought him a denarius, and [Jesus] asked them, “Whose portrait is this? And whose inscription?” “Caesar's,” they replied. Then he said to them, “Give to Caesar what is Caesar's, and to God what is God's.”
Certainly I'm no theologian, but that passage plainly says to me that Jesus feels there is a clear demarcation between Church and State, and specifically with regards to coinage, on-topic-ally enough. Anyone got a nice denarius they want to show off?
Putting "In God We Trust" is wrong for at least three reasons:
1) It tramples the rights of those whose beliefs lie elsewhere;
2) It is unconsitutional;
3) It is against the teachings of Jesus Christ.

In 1955, 1958 and 1972 people holding cents like the ones shown below had to read IGWT TWICE! We have come a long way since the 1955 to 1972 era and now we only have to read IGWT ONCE. We have made much progress as a nation! You need to consider that reading IGWT just ONCE is a fair and equitable compromise and balances the needs of those who prefer to read IGWT twice and those among us who do not want to read it even once!

I personally dont believe in a higher being either. but I have no problem with IGWT being on our money. Saying The Pledge of Allegiance never hurt me.
As far as being discriminatory goes. If it offends the Budists, Tough.
Besides a big push to remove it would be expensive. Changing all the dies, and print plates.
And change to what? In BUSH WE TRUST.
OH PLEASE NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!

I believe the name of G-d should be kept off something as base as money.
is ridiculous. We are a Christian nation, but yet we are tolerant of other religions. It seems the only intolerance is coming
from people who have a lack of faith, or those that are not of the christian faith. I think it was pretty clear to all who imigrated
here that America was a Christian nation, and was created as such.
I would like to see the anti symbol, actually anti christians go to the middle east first and tell the people there that they must
remove all references to Allah.
This is nothing but an attempt to strip all identity from us as a nation, and create the new world order.

Very nice examples of doubling. I get dizzy looking at those
I'll get back to my original post. Are we or are we not a nation that as Washington said have a duty to honor and give thanks to God for our rights, freedoms and material prosperity? Regardless of how it might offend a minority (is it really so offensive?) the motto is not some opressive form of abuse inflicted on the minority by the majority. Neither is it unConstitutional if we are to judge its Constitutionality based on the 1st amendment as interpreted by the Founders.

Ridiculous. America was created by individuals of considerable faith, no doubt. However, a Christian state was never what our founding fathers had in mind. They would not have been so vehemently opposed to integration of church and state if the opposite was true.
It's more of a shame that faith in this country has been stripped down to the use of mottos, support of political parties, and television propaganda. True faith and religious conviction is seen in the thoughts and deeds of individuals, and has nothing to do with what words are on our coins.

When they read “In God We Trust”, they somehow read “In Jesus We Trust”, and they get all bent/confused/offended. Snap out of it. Wake up! READ....

We have to remember when the motto was added. Just like the 'under God' part of the pledge, it was added at a time or peceived time of crisis. What this really says about us as a mostly Christian nation, is that we go running and crying to God when times are bad. Kind of sad on our part. We don't get religious until we need God for help. (and God should not be treated like a particular sport coat--we pull Him out when we need Him!) I'm not indicting anyone on a personal level-you know your relationship with God, but on a public level, God seems to be a nice sport coat that we dust off only when the need arises. Does that address the question posted, no, but it does or should make us "Christians" think a little bit.
<< <i>Evil only happens when good men sit idle and do nothing >>
<< <i>This WHOLE debate on having "GOD" in the pledge of allegence and on our coins is incomprehensable. The Fact of the matter is this--The Country was founded by people that wanted religous freedom to worship any god they saw fit. Anyone who wants to remove god from this country should get the hell out and go to a atheist country like Cuba or Commie China, If they don't like it. As for me there is only one I trust and that is the GOD of my UNDERSTANDING!!!!!

Nope. This country was founded by people who were not allowed to worship as they saw fit, and therefore made it a point to NOT force religious beliefs on others. (Although there are numerous failures in this regard).
While I really don't care one way or the other when it comes to IGWT on currency and coinage, it's chest thumping opinions like this that make me lean toward dumping it!
(With all due respect).
You have many things go thru your mind. One of which is GOD!
WOW!!! How ironic.
Someone who "gets" it.
Joe.

This is a bigger agenda created by the liberal left , whose belief mirrors red china and the words of Mao.
First to go religion, then? It goes together with abortion, which I do believe in for liberal couples.
