  Not trying to sound mean, but given your limited budget, I don't see it really possible to collect both VAMs and gold. I would recommend picking either one or the other, and stay focused. I do think you are taking a step in the right direction by looking for reference material to educate yourself. Once you learn the basics, and can share your knowledge with others, it will be much easier for others to share their advanced knowledge with you.

  You should get the Krause Standard catalogs first, if you do not already have them. Then you will have info on not only gold coins, but the other world coins as well.
  
  The book in the link given above is the Friedberg catalog, which is a well-known reference on gold coins.

  Krause also has a Standard Catalog of World Gold Coins if you're serious about sticking to one metal.
